sps tactical
« on: June 23, 2008, 03:20:44 PM »
Has anyone had any experience with the SPS Tactical in .308. I would love to have a "sniper rifle" but don't want to spent a ton of money as there are many guns I would like to buy. I have a plain SPS in .223 and it shoots great for the money although the stock is crappy, so I'm wondering if the tactical is a good deal also

What excites you about a tactical/sniper rifle? The thicker barrel? a better stock? both? What else? If you have a regular thin barrel SPS and dislike the stock(I agree, they suck), sell the stock for 50.00 and get an aftermarket brand that is tailored for your SPS. You'd save a butt load of $$ and still have a great shooter.

If you have your heart set on a tactical setup, the one you're looking at would be the most affordable choice. The VTR is right there but it's got the type of stock you dislike, as does the SPS Varmint. You could go stir crazy and get a VTR or SPS-V and get a different stock but the cost keeps going and going and it's addicting and that's the last thing you need if you've got your eye on other firearms.

My SPS Varmint turned Police was supposed to be an 1,100.00 project. As it stands right now, the picture in my signature totals around 1,800.00 and I'm not done yet  :( The madness never ends but I like it that way!  ;D

Nothing in particular excites me about the SPS Tactical I just saw it on the Remington website and thought I'd ask about it. I'd rather have the longer have the longer barrel of the varmint model but I'm open to anything.

Well you could get the SPS-V for 550'ish or less, sell the stock for 60'ish, and buy a H-S, B&C or that Hogue stock when you're ready. I've seen that exact Hogue tactical stock for sale on other forums for good prices lately. Just tossing out ideas :)

Another idea...

Dicks sells the green stock versions(due to popularity they sell fast on forums) of the SPS-Varmint with base/rings/scope. You could sell the stock, mounts and scope and you'd have enough for a stock of your choice...again...just ideas :)

Shot phenomenal groups with ammo from 155 grains to 168, I think the shorter stiffer barrel of the TAC shoots better than the Varmint, The stock is flimsy (flexible) and you will either modify it or replace it. The 20 inch barrel has a bit more recoil and report than the 26 inch but is handier to carry and easier to shoot off hand

I held one once and have liked them since.  I think they look like a real handy rifle that would be very accurate (from what I've read) and small enough to not be a problem in the woods.  They also have the new X-mark trigger and that's an improvement that I don't think you get in the other sps models.  I personally love hogue products so it's all the more incentive I need to eventually buy one.

I have an green SPS varmint stock I would sell if anyone is interested.

If you really want the longer barrel I would just get the SPS Varmint like sniperVLS did and upgrade the stock. I upgraded the stock on my SPS Varmint .223 with a HS Precision that came off the older model 700VS. Either version should be a great shooter.
