let's start a heated argument
« on: June 24, 2008, 03:18:52 PM »
If you only had one rifle for hunting big game (deer and up) what and why?
My choice is my Rem 7 in 300SAUM because...
1. I shoot it well
2. Bullet selection 125gr-220gr (read deer to toothy critters)
3. (this will heat it up) ;D It's just enough more than the 30/06, still shootable good velocity and power
without burning 1/2 can of powder a shot.(sorry RUM guys but 40% more powder for 10% more velocity???)
4. I can hunt any terrain with it 10yds to OMG thats a looong ways.
5. Pretty sure if I make it to Africa I can swing another grand for a real big gun.
6. With similar bullet weights it will replace any caliber from 270 on up to 338 +/- 400fps or so (I guess factory caliber some people
will neck that 50BMG down to about anything) :D  If 400FPS is going to make the differnce I have yet to see it.

Ok flame on!!     (If my choice is poor tell me I'm a big boy I can take it)

OK....you are an idiot.

Actually...I suspect you are a heck of a guy and it's a pleasure to flame ya. ;)

IF...I only had one for rest of my paltry existance, it would be 300win hands down.  Although, a 300wby would be a runner up.

Why??  I like to hunt big critters and I think the 200gr bullet is the cats a**.  I also think the 165gr is as good a general purpose, reach out and touch someone as you can get without something more exotic.  338win, also super, but kinda heavy for me in all situations.

And...I think 30cal kills better than 284 (talk about fight'n words!!!)

Lets really heat it up!

How about a SAVAGE model 24 in say a 30-30 over a 12ga.
Probably won't do for AFRICA but I'm not going there anyway.
Might be a little light for the big bears but with the right bullet who knows, anyway I still have the 12 ga slug.
It will take small game either with the rifle or the shotgun.
I don't think you would get very many small game birds with the calibers you all have mentioned and you would starve if all you could find were rabbits and squirrels!
Wouldn't be much left to eat after your guns were finished with them.
You can always find 12ga & 30-30 shells in any little town no matter where it might be.
Could always get a chamber adaptor for the shotgun and make it about anything you want.

Let's see now how did that song by HANK WILLIAMS Jr. go, oh yes ( I GOT A SHOTGUN, A RIFLE AND A 4 WHEEL DRIVE AND A COUNTRY BOY CAN SURVIVE )!!!!

well I said deer and up, But if I could find the savage in 30-06/12 ga it would have a permanent
home here. Had one in 223/12ga no more perfect coyote gun could you find! It was heavy ugly
and not super accurate but it always got the job done, had a hell of a time trying to hit birds with the 4x scope
but it was great for turkeys.

How far up is "up"?  Are we talking  coastal brownies?

For elk and down my 7mm Rem Mag was my 'one gun' for 20- years and worked flawlessly.

Well I typed this once but???
I know you should use enough gun but I can push a 220gr bullet within 200FPS+/-
of a 338WM with a 225gr and can match the 338/06 so isn't that enough gun?
Not the best choice but I wouldn't worry too much about it,(cause my guide would have a cannon) :D

Guys, you have had to hear by now that for deer and up you have to have a 458 Lott.

Well either that or a 22 hornet with 50 gr bullets.
It just depends on which tent you want to camp in.

Hows that for stiring the pot?  ;)

I reload for it, have enough brass for 3-4 lifetimes.(moderation you know)
The last time I looked at factory ammo it was $40-$50 almost fell over.
Then I looked at some of the other ammo and did.

My co-worker bought an AR rifle in 300 saum and does not reload, crazy. He had the option of 308 in this rifle and had to have the magnum round for whitetail, very crazy, but he is happy.

It is a DPMS and it is very accurate. The rifle is an AR10 and is heavy and modrate in the recoil department. It is very rough on deer.

I guess I should have called this thread something else, I was all set to defend my choice
like the 270 and 243 guys
So here goes my best attempt at a rant. ;)

because my 300SAUM is THE perfect big game caliber for this continent! :D
No smaller caliber can match the versitility, anything bigger is overkill in a magnum round and a med. range gun if not.

270/280/30-06 Not 2cents difference in any of them, starts loosing ground with heavier bullets after 300yds
Will kill anything you point them at
7mag/300WM   The only downside to these is long action heavier gun needs 24-26" barrel to shine

300RUM/30-378  I don't need 400Fps more velocity at the cost of 40% more powder,
long action, heavy gun might need it past 500yds for elk (but I can probably neek up on em)

338 and up         For a BIG bear gun ok, Bambi and his cousins just ain't that hard to kill (here someone yells raking shots)
If a Barnes bullet won't shoot lengthwise thru an elk you were far enough away to wait for a better shot.

My 300SAUM will do anything any of these will.....Hey wait maybe thats why I picked it?  ??? ;D ;D

Ok there it is my first forum Rant.   Any questions?

You can get a Valmet 412 in 12ga/30-06...  They aren't priced all that bad, and at least it will shoot BOTH bbls to the same point of aim!  (almost unherd of with those Savages) The 412's are very accurate too, out shooting many bolt action rifles..

Well, over the years i've tried out a bunch of them, and because you said "up" i'd have to pick a 700 Rem. chambered in 7mm Rem. Mag...  I'd load it with 175NP's and never look back.

It's enough cartridge and bullet to break a brown bear down, and that covers the toughest job it will get in NA.  It has enough "less" recoil than the 30's to make it my choise, and recoil IS a consideration as i would be shooting it a lot if it's my "one hunting rifle for deer on up"...

If I just had to survive, I could do quite well with a 357 mag rifle, 44 mag rifle, 45 colt rifle ect.  Any one of these would work in most situations, the 357 ammo is lighter, and with good cast bullets, could kill any thing in the lower 48.  MORE FIREWOOD!  DP.

After my tongue in cheek, smart @$$ answer, I guess I could give a real one.

While my 270 Win will take anything I will be hunting for one gun I would have to buy me a 35 Whelen.

(Deer & up), I am assuming you are in reference to NA game. Your choice will do just fine.

Actually, alot of rounds will work, including some rounds mentioned like the Whelen for many people, depending a great deal on where you hunt.  A med. bore like the Whelen, a big bore like the 45-70 & others are great to have in a rifle battery & could be that one rifle
for some situations, but not even close to all of the situations that I encounter beyond 300 yards & yes I have shot several beyond that & yes I was hunting & yes I am a bow hunter too. Some of the rounds like the 338WM, 8mm Mag, 300RUM & others can have a good niche, but again not the "one rifle" I would want. The 300WM would fill that bill for ME better than most, but one like mine (26"Sendero) is a little bigger than many would like. A 24" Medium taper would be a good compromize & that is what you wind up doing with one rifle. A "trajectory magnum" like the 7RM, 270Wea., & others are nice, but a little lite for Big Bears, Bison & such, although they will work with the right bullet.

So for this "one rifle" deal, I don't want it to be "substantially" bigger than needed 80% of the time, yet big enough for all NA game. I want it to be flat shooting, though with good optics & a good range finder I would not have to have the flatest shooter to shoot at long but sane yardages. To have only 1 rifle I need to be able to shoot alot & not erode the throat fast & that does away with a big mag.

Yes, Wyohandi, your round actualy will fill that bill nicely. I have a rifle that for me at least is even better, even though I own way too many rifles & will not use just one. One of my considerations is to be able to hand my guns down to my 3 boys & I am leaning more toward my main rifles being able to shoot factory rounds & esp. rounds that will always be available. For my use that rifle hands down would be my Win Mod. 70 30-06AI. It started off as a featherwt. & then a Brown Pre. stock was added. Due to the fact that I can seat a 180 out pretty far, coupled with the AI case I will roughly equal the 300SAUM velocities, in fact the SAUM & 30-06AI case cap. is a dead heat. Yet I can shoot fact ammo, yet with my loads with a 180 at 2,950 it is a flat shooter indeed.

To DM:

FRIENDLY HEAT!

We aren't talking double rifle here.
I thought that you aimed a rifle and pointed a shotgun.
Anyway, at less than 1/2 the price of a Valmet I can buy a whole lot more ammo.
Not bragging, I have three SAVAGES, 22lr/20ga 222/20ga 30-30/12ga, for some reason they all seem to kill what I shoot at.
I admit that they don't hit at the same place but they are close enough to get the job done.

well, I believe I did argue those were med. range rounds. :) nothing wrong with any of them just not for me.
Magnumitis? nope I just shoot a 30-06NIMP (noticeably improved)
And limit myself to one rifle? Not me 26 rifles 10 hanguns,5 shotguns,2 bows, crossbow. If you can hunt with it I got or had it once.
Just a question, to stir the pot.

I guess that about says it all!!

I don't have much use for ANY gun that i have to aim over "there" to hit over "here" !!

I'll buy "quality" every time, especially when it's really not much more than something that "almost works"...

BTW, where are you going to get a Savage in 30-06???  And, my Valmet will shoot slugs to the sights too, so now i DO have a double rifle too...
