One of the biggest bears ever killed was killed with a 22 rf rifle . It was self defence by a very young girl .

Shootall is right. When we were kids in the Indiana woods, the first thing we learned was you NEVER stepped off the pavement without some sort of ordnance. A.22 still beats a pocket knife!
While on the subject, We were started on .22's, but pretty soon were moved up to centerfires. Now, I'm 60, and big recoil isn't much of a problem. What is everyone's thinking on stepping kids up to centerfires as soon as possible?

When my own Son turned 11 or so, I always let him shoot a few shots from the sitting position using a .22-250 after offhand practice with the .22
This was a great delight to him as he could reliably blow up anything from water filled cans to red bricks @ 100yds with that 12X leoupold in place.
In short, this took his mind completely off the recoil that the gun produced and prepared him for the greater recoil of the Shotgun hunting.

by age 10 my oldest had gotten does , 8 pointer and a 4 pointer , with a 20 ga. a 12 ga. and a 7.62X39 .

Ahhhh, THE QUESTION is posted again!  It rears it's ugly head and gets everything all stirred up on a regular basis.  I can't imagine being limited to one rifle much less one gun.  If it were ONE RIFLE, I guess I'd have to sell off everything but the Model 700 .30-'06 for the obvious reasons... no need to elaborate.  If it were ONE GUN, I'd have to go with my 11-87 12 gauge.  I have three barrels for it so I can shoot birds and small game with the 28".  I have the 21" rifled barrel for slugs for bigger stuff.  The 21" cylinder bore for home defense and the heavy lead slugs (bear and such if I needed it).  Can't say that I'd willing get rid of the other 25 or so guns... or any of the other 25 or so that I want to buy...
