Barrel extender

A couple of years ago I read some stuff about people converting  14in pistol barrels to work as a carbine barrel by adding a extension to the barrel.  Is this still done is it a ok idea?  Who does this type of work?  Has anyone tried this?  Any experience that can be shared?

To be federally legal, any extension has to be permanent and result in a total lenght of at least 16".  That usually means welded to the barrel.  Set screws and other easily-removed attachment methods violate the law.

I also "heard" that it is ok to use silver solder to "weld" or tight pins.  Not heard officially, but thru local gun shop operators.  If considering I'd check with the laws first or someone who can interpret them for you.

I had a 14" 44 Mag barrel that I had a muzzle brake added so that it was just a hair over 17". There was a screw with Lock Tight and tightened in and the head removed. It would be very difficult to remove.

I have a 8" 44 Mag barrel with a choke that has straight grooves cut in it. It sticks beyond the barrel about 3". Hot Shot was a brand name by T/C for a plastic cup that was filled with bird shot. The choke was used to strip hot shot covers and stop the shot from rotating from the rifling and ruining the pattern. They were expensive and did not sell very well, so they were dropped from their line years ago. I still have a few Hot Shots left over from the old days. They were supposed to have about the same hitting power of a .410.
