I am not sure what gun you are thinking about putting it on. Look in the Nef/H&R rifles (http://www.gboreloaded.com/forums/index.php/board,126.0.html) section and do a search on the 444. You will find it very accurate with the right loads. Quicktdoo has an extensive Handi collection and he has has had very good luck with his. There is a question about half way down the page on this very subject. I believe Quick has posted a few pictures of targets he shot with the 444 Marlin. I have one too, but have not been out with it yet. I just got bullets for it last week. Good Luck and Good Shooting.

BTW they are 22" long.

I was looking at putting it on an Encore. I can only find it  in the custom barrels and can buy a Marlin lever for the same price.

I was hoping you were talking about the Encore. I think you can get it in the G2, but in IMHO they are too heavy recoiling for that frame. 444 in a 6 pound gun is not my idea of a fun time. I do not have 444 in a lever, but I do have a Marlin 1894 in 44 Mag. It is a light, fast pointing gun. I like it. I think you would like a Marlin 444 in a lever action.

444 Marlin is not a factory chambering in a Contender.  It is custom only, and then should be loaded down a bit for safety.  I have a 444 barrel for my Encore.  I bought it about a year ago from Midway as a standard barrel.  It is still sitting in the closet.  Haven't gotten around to shooting it yet.  (Don't want to sell or trade it either.)

Sorry, but no.  I did a little looking and found them at Midway.  Blue 24" barrels for Encore in stock for $266.99 stock # 218429.  That's the best I can do!

I had a 444 Marlin lever gun for a few years back in the middle '90's, a big boomer.  I used a compressed load of H335 under a Horndy 300 grain XTP for great accuracy and power.  1 1/2" at 100 yards launched at 2160fps.  The books have since slowed this load down to 2000fps, still, good for big things at close to moderate ranges.  I would have kept that rifle if it had had the new 1 in 20 twist Ballard style rifling instead of the Micro-Groove 1 in 38 twist barrel.  Oh well. a purchase in the future perhaps.
I aim to please - but often miss.
