Anyone on the board make their own spinnerbaits? I've added tooling to make 1/4 thru 1/2 oz. bannana head spinnerbaits. My question is how do you paint your lead? I'm airbrushing the heads now, but have to add a dry retarder because of stringing problems. I'm using a 40% thinned vinyl paint as a base coat.

I've made them for a few years. I don't normally get too technical painting the heads. For me, the lifespan of a spinnerbait is 2 trips tops, so really, I'm just painting to get by. What do I use? Well, if you see me in the fingernail polish section at WallyWorld, don't think I'm a cross dresser.

That Stuff comes in 300 colors, glitter, non-glitter, basically anything you need, and, it works. It also dries pretty fast. Now, I do give it 2 coats for the base, then just dot in 2 eyes.

I get my "paint" there too. I do the same with the two coats and eyes but I also add some blood red splashes to the bottom of mine. Just seems to work for me. As far as the strange looks from other shoppers goes I just tell them I have a wife, two daughters and three granddaughters. That always works. Lawdog

Here's something that may help both of you (if there's any hope left). For color combinations that I don't have access to in a vinyl paint, I use Testor's model paint or Duplicolor automotive paint. Both dry very quickly, and you won't have to take fingernail polish to the checkout counter!

I was hoping for the "correct" way to finish the lead. You can't dip these wire baits like I do my jigheads. Just seems like there has to be a way to get a good finish without the waste of an airbrush.

I didn't even know that you could make your own spinnerbaits. Is there some kind of kit that i could buy??

Jan's Net Craft, Stamina, and Barlow's all 3 as well as others sell the necessary ingredients. From them, you can buy your wire, swivels, blades, skirt materials or pre-made skirts whatever you need to make them with. You will also need molds, a lead pot, and lead. They also sell the molds from Do-It for making spinnerbaits, jigs, Little Georges, inline spinners, and other items. I get my lead from the &*() Shop where they take the &*^^% weights off and toss them in a 5 gallon can. 1 can weighs over 200 pounds and will do you a while. You have to first melt them and remove the impurities as well as the steel clips. I pour whats left in a small ignot mold. Someone tearing down an old house is also a good place to find lead, and pure lead at that. They used to make the shower bottoms out of a sheet of lead. 1 old tile shower shield will be a lot of lead. Same as before, melt to remove impurites and make it handier.
