J B bore paste for barrel break-in???

I hope this is the correct forum for this question. I am recently retired and I am breaking in barrels on some new and some seldom shot rifles. The first six rifles have been processed by the following procedure-35-one shot and clean. My bore cleaner(pro-shot copper solvent lV) is not aggressive-so I let it soak for a couple of hours to dissolve the copper before shooting again.  Days are required to polish each bore.  I recently purchased some J B bore paste.  How should I apply this to new and used bores to break-in barrels?  A couple of barrels will be stainless-steel and others will be regular chrome-moly. I have read that some barrel manufacturers will polish their barrels with J B bore paste???

I gave up on breaking in barrels long ago I'm just too lazy and really can't tell it matters that much. I do admit that at some point along the process the barrels seemed to foul a bit less and clean up a bit easier but never saw a difference in accuracy due to it. Cleaning guns is about my least favorite activity in all the world so I tend to do it as little as necessary. I'll do it when needed but no more.

I do still use JB on all new rifles however. My procedure is to use either a tightly fitted patch on jag or a tightly fitted bore mop coated with JP. I normally run it in and out of the barrel a total of 50 trips up and down the barrel and normally will add more paste half way thru.

I use Barnes CR-10 bore cleaner as it's the most agressive I've seen yet to remove copper. When cleaning my barrels I'll use it in combination with JB Bore Paste to be sure I get all the copper out.

 I have several varmit/sendero rifles and other hunting rifles. While I was in Kuwait for 16 months during 2006-2007, I googled varmit sites on my computer to pass some down time and 1st read about barrel break-in.  Some sware by it--others said it didn't matter. One barrel maker said they polished the bores with J B bore paste but didn't state how much or how long. During the "shoot and clean" process, I noticed that after about 18-20 rounds, the bore seems to have less drag and fouls less.  Before that point I should be cleaning twice between shots to ensure I was back to bare metal again in the bore. I was thinking that 2 days of bore paste conditioning might accomplish the same results of 2 weeks of "shoot and clean". I've come to realize some of the processes that help the BR shooter obtain a 1" group at 300 yds may not do the same for my hunting/varmit barrels. The only gun I've tried the J B paste on so far was a Rem 700 VLS in 6mm Rem.  As of yet unfired by me. I did 2 overnight soaks to clean factory test fires. I then put J B's on a jagged patch twice for 30 passes each.  The patch was black each time it was removed and replaced.  I appreciate the info provided from such a wealth of practical experience.  Now that I'm retired,this is the 1st time I've been able to provide the time, effort, and resources to providing proper attention to my firearms. Working 6-7 days a week most of the last 15 yrs doesn't leave much time to do what needs to be done.

Ya got that right John. Now that you're retired give me a call some time and we can get together and do some shooting. Since my best friend and shooting partner died I've not done nearly as much shooting as I used to. It just isn't as much fun shooting alone.

i use a patch and about 50 pulls  all from the chamber end you may have to change patch often if the bore is real rought. normally i change about 3 times.

I'm in the Don't see much difference camp too. But to remove copper I use
Hoppe's # 9 Benchrest. It is agressive though,so be sure to clean it out well & don't leave it in too long. I llet it work 15 minutes or so. Never hours or overnight .

Using a copper brush will give you a false sense of copper coating in your barrel especially with solvent. So i went to stiff nylon brushes. At the range I swab my barrel after so many shots and then shoot more it seem to help with the copper in the bore. On the subject of breaking in, I buy hand lapped barrels for my rifles and I don't think one needs to any breakin proceedure. Years ago bought a rifle went right out and sighted it in never heard of breaking in a rifle go figure. Lou
