Short barrels
« on: June 28, 2008, 02:19:56 PM »
Just for kicks I was wondering if anyone has or uses a barrel that is shorter than 10".

Thanks, GEF

Some of the TCA barrels were offered shorter, and I've seen quite a few custom barrels as well that were shorter than 10".   Seems like most of the customs were straight case chambers to approximate revolver/pistol handguns.
Evolution at work. Over two million years ago the genus Homo had small cranial capacity and thick skin to protect them from their environment. One species has evolved into obese cranial fatheads with thin skin in comparison that whines about anything and everything as their shield against their environment. Meus

Yep, I just recently picked up a Coyote Guns Contender barrel that is 8 inches long chambered for the 445 Super Mag.  I call it my snub nose 'tender.

Yes. I have two 6 1/2" Thompson/Center Association barrels, 1 in .22LR, and 1 in .44 Mag. and have enjoyed them. I wish I had one in .45ACP.
Received as  gifts, I also have 3 SSK barrels: a 6 1/2" .45-70 (!!!), a 5 1/8" .480 Ruger, and a 5 1/4" 7.62x25mm Tokarev, which runs an 85-87 gr. bullet @ 1600-1625 fps from that short barrel ! Those barrels shorter than 6 1/2" require shortening a fore-end, which I have done.
All these barrels except for the .45-70 are wearing red dots, mostly the Ultra Dot, with a Millet on the Tokarev. I've used the .22LR for squirrels, and plan to use the Tokarev on an occasional close groundhog, but haven't done it yet. The .45-70 was a bear to develop loads for, but is presently set up for hogs, wearing a 2X Leupold. The original Ultra Dot failed on it.

I have always heard that the shorter the barrel on a 44mag the more ferocious it became in the recoil department.  Ken how bad is your short barrel 44 for recoil?  Rick how is your 445 for recoil?

With full magnum loads, it gives you all you want, plus some. In the last couple of years, though, I've been running a 200 gr. JHP about 1100 fps, which is quite pleasant

A couple of years ago I was speaking about big boomers while on the phone with one of the custom barrel makers. They were in the process of making a 9" 416 Rigby for one of their clients  :o

Myself, a stubby 357 mag or 45 Colt would be more to my liking.

I've seen a few and have been given serious consideration to ordering a 6inch 45AutoRim barrel from MGM if I can find a set of fiberoptic sight that were offer by T/C in the past. Here's a couple of pictures to wet your appetite.

This is a 32H&R

This one is a 40 S&W by Bullberry

I have 2 shorter barreled Encores, a 8 inch OTT 500 Mag and a 8 Inch Gary Reeder 510 GNR.  I have shot them out to 100 yards and they are tack drivers. I also have a 10 inch Gary Reeder 410 GNR, what a blast to shoot, it is a 454 Casull necked down to 41 Caliber.  ;D

Those  barrels are not mine but I believe they are 6inchers.  Here's a couple of more from my "IDEA FILE"

How about a 8inch 32H&R Mag

Someone mentioned a 45acp about a 7inch model

How about a 6inch 9mm

Like I said these are not mine, but pics I've gethered and stored in my TC IDEA FILE for future reference for my own projects

I have 3 of the 6.5 inch TCA barrels a 22lr, a 32 H&R, & a 9mm. I also have a pair of the origional 45LC/410 barrels with the external choke. with out the choke the barrel is about 8 inches long. I would love a 6.5 in 762x25(tokarov caliber) but I would'nt know where to get one. I do love how the guns look with the stubby barrels. I even traded my 16.1 45/70 barrel (with hunter muzzlebreak) for the 9mm barrle I now own. Someday I'd also love to get a MGM double barrel in 8 or 10 inches with iron sights. Perhaps a high front sight with a bar for each barrel so you can sight in for both. 22 lr on to 22 mag on the bottom.

Not shorter than 10, but I had a 14" 7-30 Waters cut to 10 " and for me, I can shoot it offhand sooo much better and at least at 100 yards, I have noticed no loss of accuracy and the deer have not noticed either.

I got me a 71/4" 357 magnum for my encore. it was made by bullberry. I have only shot it a few time and from what I see it looked like it has a good chance to be a good shooter.

This is my 7" MGM .357 Magnum barrel.

Grip is OEM that has been roundbutted. Forend ground out of a 'competitor' forend. The gun is my best offhand shooting handgun I own.
