building up front sight
« on: June 29, 2008, 01:40:45 PM »
With a fixed sighted handgun if you shoot to high you can file down the front sight some to raise P.O.I. but how can one build up the front sight if it is hitting to low?

If it is hitting low you need to take some off the front sight not add some.  Larry

OK I got it back wards, but once you file the sight down and change ammo how do you build up the front sight?

You will not need much buildup, I have used regular soft solder, use an acid flux and a really hot iron and you can add a 1/16 inch real easy.   Larry

Some sights are replaceable with pins or dovetails holding them in place. They can just be changed out for a higher one.

You could try something like a JB Weld paste or even a bedding compound to raise the height of the front sight.  Mikey.

I would think that drilling and adding a pin or 2 would insure that the JB Weld would stay secure forever.

I would go with the soft solder also....It is real easy to shape and will last forever...Or you can do like many people do... just know where to hold it in order to make it hit....

You can also cut a dovetail and buy a replaceable front sight for the slide on your autopistol.. Dovetail files are available from Brownells and the process is not hard to do. I would reccomend a dial calipher to help with the layout.. This gives ready adjustability!
