Use of Grease Cookies
« on: July 01, 2008, 11:12:31 AM »
I had terrible accuracy out of my 45-75 because of hard fouling. I added a grease cookie of SPG 1/16 inch thick and the gun 'shoots dirty' very accurately. Thanks for the advice Stimpylu ;D

Can I ask if you are wiping the bore in between shots??? I have aften thought of trying the cookies myself, but never did..My idea was to
come up with something where you did NOT have to clean between shots..I was told it would never work so gave up on it...Now you
got me interested in it again..I was going to use my home made lube of olive oil and bees wax...How did you manage to get the cookie
so thin..1/16 inch is pretty thin..Did you compress the load before adding the cookie?  Sorry for being so damn nosey.. ::) ::) ::) ::)

I shoot ten shots between cleanings. The grease cookie makes this possible although I am told that using a blow tube will work......... remember to keep the barrel cool as heat hardens the fouling and down goes accuracy. I use SPG lube. I compress before adding a 1/32 milk carton wad and lube cookie.

To make the grease cookies a slowly melt the lube in a small tin lid to a depth of 1/16 thick, let harden and cut out with a case mouth cut from a case.

Good luck.

The way we make grease cookies.    Put a round cake pan, half filled with water, on the burner at a real low temperature.  cut your lube into pea sized bits and float them on the water.    (There is a formula you can use to calculate the volume of lube that will give the desired end result thickness)    When the water becomes hot, the lube will melt and float on the water.  DON"T LET IT BOIL!    when the lube has melted and floats uniformly across the surface, just turn the burner off and let it cool over night. run a thin sharp knife around the edge and remove your big grease cookie.  When loading just add the powder and card wad if any and push the case mouth through the big cookie.

The formula to figure out how much lube depends on the thickness you desire and the diameter of the pan.  Most round cake pans are 8 inch.    so lets say you want a 1/8 inch grease cookie thickness.      3.14 (pi) x  (4) radius x (4) equals 50.24 square inches.     divide 50.24 by 8 equals 6.28 cubic inches of lube.

The variation I heard on that was to use two rods or rulers equal to the thickness you want and place them on either side of the lube puddle, cover with the second wax paper sheet and roll the cookie out between them on a flat surface, the cookie will be the thickness of the rods/rulers that you use.
