Which LER scope for M38?
« on: July 01, 2008, 08:01:17 PM »
I've got a good shooting M38 nagant that I've had for a while.  I've done a couple of mods to it like tuning the trigger a bit and putting a recoil pad on and glassing the stock.  I'm interested in putting a long eye relief scope on it to get the most out of it.  The thing is I've never been real big on scopes, always prefering good quality iron sights, so I know exactly jack about scopes.  My main shooting will be between 100-150 yards, with a few max range shots around 300 yards.  There are a couple of mounts for scopes out there that replace the rear sight, that's not a problem, but which scope?  What's with all the numbers and X's and such?  I will probably leave the original stock as it's glass beded and I like the feel of it.  I have no intention of putting a bent bolt in eigther.  Would a lighted cross hair help in low light? ???

Help???

Thanks,
Will

There is no perfect middle ground when trying to scope a Mosin.  I've never seen a scout mount that I liked. They are just weird and most of them never hold zero well enough for me to trust one to hunt with it.
What ever you do, stay away from the cheapo ebay mounts and LER scopes.  They won't hold zero because most of the Chinese mounts are made from cast aluminim with steel screws.  They always strip out and you are constantly resetting zero.  The scope that comes with most of these sets are made by NC Star.  Bushnell makes a LER scope for a pistol that will function for much less but it is not a true scout scope.

I have several Mosins and the only one I scoped was a rough Izzy that came with the ATI mount already attached when I bought it.  It'll hold 2-3inches @100 on a good day which is perfect for hunting.  The Ati mount works but it destroys the rifle.

Thanks, but I'm not concerned with keeping the rifle original, not with less than 100$ in it.  If it comes down to it I can machine a steel mount, that's not a problem, I just don't know anything about scopes.  I did handle several at Gander MT. and liked the LER style better than any normal scope I've tried.  I'll check out the ATI mount.

Thanks, will check them out.  Surplusrifle.com has several articles about scoping a Nagant, but don't realy go into detail about the scopes.

Will: I scoped an M44.  I used the S&K mount and a cheapo BSA 2X pistol scope.  works great and I shoot some pretty stout reloads out of mine.  The S&K mount is kind of pricey, but it is solid as a rock.  I think that about any pistol scope will work for you.

I picked up one of the cheap Ebay mounts and scope for $60.  It works fine and now it holds zero after some liberal use of lock-tite.  It is a 2-7 x 32 scope and yes, I'm quite sure it's an NCStar. I've had no problems with it, but you can't overtighten the screws.  It also doesn't line up left to right with the bore, but there's enough adjustment in the scope to make up for it, and I don't shoot it far enough for that bit of angle to matter (under 300yds).

Thanks, I've got one of the mounts and scopes from S&K on the way.  Will give a report when I get it in and mounted.  Sad part is having more in the scope and mount than in the rifle!
