Ruger Hawkeye ?

 I was all set to buy one untill last night when I read an article in June's Outdoor Life which trashed them pretty bad, especially in terms of accuracy. I think they got a II rating. What do you guys think ? I may just try to buy an old Savage 99 or Winchester 88 instead. It would be for deer hunting in North Mo. Mixed farm and wood land . I was going to get a .308. What would be your preference, wood/blue or s/s if you got one. .

I have a Hawkeye and haven't had a problem with it.  Accuracy is superb.  I would bet if the guys from Outdoor Life sent their inaccurate rifle back to Ruger the company would make it accurate.

I don't believe much what the magazine story tellers say, because they are living in a fog when it comes to normal guy’s rifle perspectives.

If I had sponsors that provided me with an unlimited supply of firearms, scopes and ammunition, then yes I could closely scrutinize down to the last minute detail.

I have a Ruger M77 MKII in 270 Winchester with a Leupold Vari-X II 3-9x40mm scope that has given me 1/2 MOA with my reloads.  I use only IMR-4831 and either Hornady Interlock flat base 150 grain spire points or Nosler 150 grain Partitions.  I also have no problems with my stock trigger.

I would say buy it, if you want it.  The 308 Winchester is an excellent choice as well.

i can honestly tell you that i took the time to read their article about the ruger on the web.    one kind of ammo' in one caliber.....    that article wasn't worth my time; and i recommend you get rid of your subscription to that garbage if you have one.

buy the Ruger in .308, or .30-06, or .270, or maybe best of all in .280 Remington.   if you handload, buy the .280 Rem' and develop a good load for it.   then go hunting with confidence.    bullet development is very good in the .280 caliber.    and it's a long-range, killing cartridge.   

every rifle is a rule unto itself.   those clowns at O.L. know that.   i won't be getting rid of any ruger because of what they've written.

Here is what 2 of my trashy Ruger RLs will do with 20 inch barrells , the top target is my 223 and the bottom is my 308.
Ive got 5 Ruger ceterfires with one being a Hawkeye, and it shoots very well. Im not going to tell you that you will never get a bad one but in my opinion not a bigger chance than with any other manufactures. Ive havent got hold of a bad one YET! The holes outside the groups are purely operator error

  I also put little to nothing  into what the magazines, be it printed or video, say about products.   Too often now, ppl expect match grade for evrything when it's not neccessary.  They also seem to expect absolute perfection in everything as well.  Neither of these is needed for a standard hunting rifle.  It's only gotta funstion and shoot "minute of game".  I'd feel perfectly fine with the Ruger myself.   Put more emphsis from real folks experiences than from these "experts".

I've got the SS in 7-08 and it's sweet. No accuracy problems, does better than MOA.

My 7mm-08 Hawkeye delivers a sub -MOA with Winchester factory ammo.  It is a great value for the money.  I may get another in 308 just for fun!
