.243 H&R Poor Accuraacy

Hey fellas,  Got a question maybe you all can help.  I bought a .243 H&R Youth model.  At 100  yards with factory Fusion 95 grain and  Winchester 80 Grains I am getting a group of 4-8 inches.  I have never had a gun shoot such bad groups. I shoot a .325 WSM Model, a Ruger M77 7mm-08 and Winchester .243.  None of my other rifles are nearly this bad.  Is there anyone who can lend a little advice on this H&R rifle?  I am shooting from a prone position with Bi-Pods and prone without Bi-Pods.

Loose the bipod, most break barrels shoot best suppported under the frame unless you do some work to the forend, either fully bed it or pillar bedded and floated, the Handi is no different, the 243 Superlight model can be even more critical, specially if you allow the barrel to warm up. Spend some time in the FAQs and Help sticky, that's what it's there for, lots of answers in there that help you accomplish decent accuracy. Use the search feature for superlight in this forum, thousands of posts on it, and welcome aboard.  ;)

get rid of it . I have a .243 with a 20" barrel . I call my self a good shot and a fair gun smith, I could not get mine to shoot better than 3" group period. I tried all the stuff on the help page and do reload but I think that the 20" barrel in .243 is just JUNK. I talk with a bunch of old gun buffs (wealth of knowledge) and they think that the rate of twist for the barrel length is too fast there fore an un stable bullet . I did slow down my reloads but this came dangerously close to below starting loads . I don't suggest that you try this, it is very dangerous. Like I said, get rid of it and save your self alot of time, money and heart ache. It will never shoot any better than a 2.5" group and you would have spent enough money to buy a Remington that will shoot 1/2" groups out the box.

The .243 is the most finicky of all Handi barrels IMO.  I sold mine.

My son has one.  I gave it to him when he was 8, he's now 19.  He has shot several Caribou with it.  Ranging from 75 to 150 yards, all one shot kills.  From the bench it shoots like crap.  But shooting off hand like he does when hunting it shoots well enough to get the job done.  In other words it shoots better off hand than on the bench using a rest.  The only thing we did to it was to put an O-ring under the forearm.

Granted some of the SL barrels are a royal pain while others can and are great shooters .
