30 Reece project.
« on: July 04, 2008, 02:48:30 AM »
Well time to stimulate the 30 Reece shooters again.  I just ordered a set of dies and 200 brass from Carson Reece.  Next question is who to have make the barrel.

OTT is atleast a 10 month wait and I have never dealt with MGM.  Heard good things though.

Has anyone else purchased a 30 Reece recently?

Yes, OTT made my barrel and I waited. I just love it, it is fun. Very accurant. I like small pistol barrels. The EDM chanbers will be rought. My Top three are 30 Reece Contender , SSK 300 wispher Contender and a 30-20 MOA.  Get a 15 Inch barrel. My barrel is a 15 inch shien match top grade. After everything is said and do you will not be sorry. I looked for a picture but could not find it.  Best of luck. Twyman

I have three 300 Whisper barrels.  How does the 300 Whisper compare to the 30 Reece?

In a 10 inch contender a 30 Reese will shot a 150 grain bullet with 14.9 grains of WW296 has a AVG Volocity 1662 ft/sec and the 300 Whisper with 150 grains bullet and WW296 of 14.8 gains has a 1600 ft/sec.  Without looking at the data I would have said," that the whisper was the better round". Whisper data was from the Yellow contender data book and 30 Reece is in a 30 Reece data book that Carson Reece provides. In a 15 inch 30 Reece contender barrel will push a 150 gain bullet with 14.9 gains of WW296 at 1783 ft/sec.

Not familiar with 30 Reece. What is parent cartridge or what are case dimensions?

Thanks

Doc T,
If you have 3 whisper barrel you sound likr the guy to ask. I just trades for a .300 Whisper and alittle over 1,000 Lead Head 205 gn. bullets. I have a pile of other Wildcat so I`m used to the gray zone. I will pull one of the rounds I got and see what the guy that shot the gun was useing, but could you give me some starting loads for a 205 cast bullets. I know I don`t like to post load so much so if you want to PM me I would appreciate it.
 thanks Catfish

Parent case is a 357 magnum.  30 Reece is 1.165 inches long with a neck length of .295 and a shoulder of 35 degrees.  Body has .004 taper and looks like a ackley improved cartridge.

i have a 14" stainless MGM .30reece. It has become my favorite small plinking round.

case capcity is slightly above the 32/20, a bit less than the 300 whisper.  You can use standard .357 mag brass to form cases in a single pass through the sizer die, though you will have to trim a few thousandths off. i used .38 special instead, so probably wont have to worry about ever trimming. Even using .38 brass, the case neck length is more than adequate.

Carson Reece sells the dies (Hornady), seems like i paid about $35, and also has formed & properly headstamped cases if you prefer to buy them. he is a pleasant fellow to work with, and also gave me booklet of loada data tested in 10", 15", & 24" barrels.

The TC custom shop is chambering for the round as well.

Carson's load data reported the following with 110 grain Hornadys out of a 15" tube:

17.5gr H110....2242.0 fps
17gr 296.........2121.7 fps
14gr 2400.......2090.8 fps
14gr AA#9......2035.2 fps
16.5gr H4227...2003.1 fps
10.5gr Blue Dot..1856.9 fps

My MGM tube gives 3-shot cloverleafs at 50 yards, and shoots sub-1" at 100. I also found mine really likes the hornady 90 grXTP, and would guess velocities  at 2500 or so, havent clocked them yet. Hodgdon's Lil Gun has given some very good grups, though it seems to like most evrything i have fed it so far. I plan on having a carbine made up as well.

If you call Kerry at MGM he will make you a great barrel, the last few barrels i've ordered from him have averaged a 6 week production time or so.

Hope the info is of some use.

Regards;

Gerald

I also can vouch for MGM barrels, between my son and I, we have 4 of their barrels and all are very accurate.  Wait time has been 6 to 8 weeks always. Great people to do business with.
