Now if I could stop jumping when the cannon goes off, the pictures wouldn't be fuzzy but they always are.

A couple of shots from the ¼-scale 12-pounder Napoleon 1857 today. There were more, but these two yielded the best 'fire & smoke' images.

Click on the photos to see the videos:

Links to larger (640x480) format videos are available on request. I posted the smaller versions to speed up loading.

Happy Fourth of July!

I took out all of my cannons, the following are the pics that came out.

First the CS mortar with the frame bed:

It is golf-ball caliber loaded with 100gr FFFG and 500 BlackCat firecrackers. The thin orange lines are the firecracker fuses, it was a long exposure.

Same load taken later when it was darker. Cannon is fuzzy 'cause it moved during the exposure.

Brass firecracker cannon, no vent, fuses are folded up along firecracker and the bit that sticks out is lit. A half .22 shell is used for a powder measure to provide the powder charge. Designed so the kids could set it off without fuse being spit at them.

My breech loader, the fuse just lit. I loaded it with 1 .22 shell of FFFFG and one TNT brand firecracker. TNT firecrackers are sealed with clay which makes them heavier than regular crackers and they hold up better when fired. They went 20 to 25 yards before poping. I was very happy.

I hope everybody had a wonderful 4th!

Well, if all this computer digivideo stuff works, you guys should see the most amateurish movie ever made, but at least you get to see the baseline against which all others by us, (hopefully much better), can be compared.  A fireball still is included too, a little small, but it's finally in existence.  What a learning curve!

We realized that the 4th was going to be hotter than a pistol, so we escaped the shop at 4:30 AM on the 3rd and set up at 6:00 AM.  It was foggy and a wet, cold, 56 deg., drisle was with us until 9:00 AM.  So much for an early start!  When we could see down to the far end of the range, we commenced firing, NOT BEFORE.

The still shows the Brooke fired with 518 grains of BP and a 9 oz. milled base bolt, (12L14) steel at approx. 1,400 fps.

The movie: the water jug at 100 yards is the fourth segment, the last segment.

Happy 4th of July everybody!

Hope these all work, but there are no guarantees.

All of you guys have mastered this Movie shoot and spectacular, still photo business very, very well.  It's going to be a long time before we catch up.  But we certainly will have some fun trying!  To those of you who noticed tweety "living on the edge", all we can say is, we love birds as much as the next guy, especially after they have a real good scald on them, as in fried chicken!  Although both of us scan the range for hikers, mushroom pickers and antelope or beef critters, before each shot, we just can't see those birds which are hardy bigger than butterflies.

Thanks to all who have inspired us to get beyond static, non-action stills.  We are really in awe of your work in this action-still area!!

Regards,  Mike and Tracy

M&T,

I know that there was no ill will torwards Tweety. He got up in the end. I was just amazed to see how he just hovered there. I've had the same issues at ranges also. As, for the still images from the videos. I think most of us either have programs to capture or, the camera has the ability to do so. After seeing all of "EL Cazador 66" videos I recently decided to upgrade my old camera for one that takes better video.

 1. I'm getting to old "NOT TO JUMP" when they go off, and I certainly couln't time the shutter with the blast,,, I would have to take 50 pics in hopes of one being on time...so here they are ,I hope you like them......

Before and after of the lil toaster

                                                      Now for the thundermug

Who said a small piece of steel wool was a bad thing?

Have fun all, I hope to see more pics of others soon, I will post some video this week as well.............

Wow ! very nice indeed! ., the videos are great ! ., I love the videos and photos .., to an obsessive point actually. I found myself making a video for the mother-in-laws U.S. Trip thru our 4th of July..., anyway it turned out to big for Youtube ., actually its HUGE ., there are alot of cannons in it. Since the Mother-in-Law is from the Philippines ., pictures of American flags in her photos are important to her., so she can show her friends she was really in the U.S. of A.   I dressed her up as a pirate and let her raise our flag...., after that there is lots of fire......, but again its a big download off of my server for those of you bored with nothing to do. It was fun to make and saves me memry's it do.

If those of you who have broadband service have not seen Tropico's 4th of July movie yet, please take 10 or 12 minutes to download it.  It's the best home movie I have ever seen.  It reminds me of the old days when we had real fireworks and a really noisey good 'ole time celebrating freedom and Independence from Tyranny.  I love it!  Looks like a real good time was had by all!!

Rich, Thank You.

I thought it looked like a titanium burst too, but  I think it was just the fact that I set the camera to night vision, and that greatly sacrafices color for detail........

In fact it was a very, very small piece of 0000 steel wool ,at most 1/10th of a full piece maybe less used for wood and paint finishing, just placed loosely on top of BP charge.

The 3 shots with the sparks are all from one firing starting with the moment of initiation ,and the next 2 following frames the video was shot at 30fps.

Just for the record no odd fouling , or metal fusion occurred from this.....just sparks galore,,,

I don't know if I would advise this in any areas that could catch fire easily....fortunately or unfortunately as it were ,we had massive rains the night before all the way up to the morning of the 5th...so our area was ground soaked for the most part...when we did this

Interesting. I'll have to try some steel wool myself.

I have some fine mesh titanium, so I'll try a shot with that next time out also.

It certainly did have a neat effect, but I don't think I would try the titanium in any form other than a woolly type mesh, that stuff burns extremely bright and hot,and may actually fuse inside the barrel or explode....I would certainly want to test it's properties in a controlled environment before I loaded any up....

the steel wool mesh I used would ignite easily ,but to progress it's burn it needed to be blown on very hard, I think Titanium burns a little more aggressive than that.........

That was one of only two that burned all the way to about 1,000 ft; we put about another 20 bowling balls at the bottom of the pond, that's about 50 total now.

This board is for discussion of black powder mortars and cannon as defined in our rules posted at the top of this forum.

Stokes mortars are specifically prohibited from this forum.

Pyrotechics do not fall with in the scope of this board either.  Metal wools added for effect fall into a gray area; a very dark gray area.  Gasoline bombs are absolutely out.

As long as the major portion of the post falls with in the parameters established for this forum I will let the post stand.   We all like to see the modern stuff once in a while as well as the old stuff.

If you are new to our board, I encourage you to take the time to visit our rules and become familiar with them...

Douglas

After reading through this entire thread a second time I realized that DD's comments were aimed at me....

I haven't been a member here that long, but it appears to me DD that you must be miffed that my name has the same initials..although mine had a bit more imagination.....

I have seen topics here on using a pound of bp in one anvil to launch another anvil, topics on firing golf balls or pop cans filled with cement, and you rarely make a negative comment, oh! and flaming bowling balls,as well as a previous topic where the member also mentioned using steel wool for firing blanks at night for an audience during reenactments , which is where I got the idea from actually, and nothing negative by you was posted there either, but you still manage to take shots at me regardless .

If this is like some new guy hazing thing then so be it,but if not, then just what is your problem.?. I didn't see where anyone even mentioned a stokes mortar, those usually have projectiles with fins, mounted with a tripod, and are classified as a military weapon.
I hardly think a small tuft of steel wool disintergrating upon firing, and flying straight up 15ft and back down again qualifies as anything close, nor does it reach into the Pyrotechnic world either, I have seen too many photos here with larger sparking created by unburnt BP flying out the end and catching fire than anything I have mentioned,or listed and I did pre qualify my posts with the mention of the soaking rain..the night before being a mitigating factor

and I also don't see a replica antique thundermug as being a new device......regardless the outer finish....

Giving a 57 Chevy a new paint job ,doesn't make it any less a classic..................

So as far as I'm concerned, I understand, and respect your authority and responsibility to this board and maintaining the rules, but why not start making them apply to everyone ,instead of  ending any post I comment in with some negative directed at me, frankly I find it petty, and a bit UN even handed.....had you thought that it was such a bad idea maybe you should have chimed that in ,on the thread here that gave me the idea in the first place, and maybe I wouldn't have tried it....

I guess  I understand a die hard old school-er wanting to guide a newbie, but your bordering on being overly critical to me personally ,and condescending, so maybe this isn't the best forum for me to be a part of....because I too am an old school-er,but the way I learned the game was "Play Rough- Play Hard- but Play Fair",,, and you seem to have forgotten the Fair part....

Life is just too short to have someone try to curb me like their dog,,,, just because they can.....

So to the rest of you Good Luck, and thanks for the spirited conversations, but I don't believe I have run a foul of this boards rules in any way,and to be constantly given DD's negative posts, and  be redirected to the boards rules,as if I have violated them in some way is just getting old.....and as Elvis once said "when this ceases to be fun I will cease doing it"

Dross Drunk,

There was one offending post and it was edited--stokes mortar picture removed--and the offending party was notified privately via pm, and it was not you?

Further, the action was taken only after complaints from other board members.

The pyrotechnic warning is a standard generic warning that I have to post semi annually.  The warning generally comes a few days after the pass of the 4th of July and New Years celebration. This isn’t the board for pyrotechnic discussion. I generally let the discussion slide a bit then post the reminder.  I enjoy the discussion also.  We are not experts in the field of pyrotechnics. So we can’t be sure what is posted is safe.  Thus we try to curb such discussions. Safety is first

We are always getting new people on the board.  Some jump right in and start posting without a problem. Others just start typing without even bothering to find out what the board is about. When they do that I have to post the reminder about the board rules or where references requested can be found on the board.

If I think you have violated some board rule that needs brought your attention, you will get a PM, not a public post.  If I disagree with a point you have made, I will discuss it here with you publicly and the post will be addressed to you as is this one.

The post I made on July 14th was a general notice to everyone to get the topic back on track…nothing more. It was directed at no one specifically.  It does not say you did anything…on the other hand if the specific items mentioned in the post fit---well look again as they fit several others also.
