New to reloading 9mm
« on: July 05, 2008, 12:24:36 PM »
I've been a lurker in the H&R/NEF Handi rifle section for a few months but i just started to reload. As of the moment i am loading 9mm lugers to get a feel for relaod and i would like to ask what anyone here thinks of my recipe.

remington brass
remington 124 grain hollow points
5.2 grains unique powder
federal no. 100 primer

My overall cartridge length is 1.168", this is the length of another 124gr hollow point that works well in my pistol.

First of all, welcome! Alliant's web site gives 4.9grs of Unique as a max load with the 125gr FMJ. My IDPA load in 9mm is 4.4grs of Bullseye. When I loaded Unique it was about 4.5grs if memory serves. I'd back off to that loading if I were you, just to be one the safe side. The powder manufacturer's web site is always a good source of load data. It'll help keep you out of trouble. Good shooting!!

thanks for the info. I went for a speer manual for the powder, the manual says max load is 5.8, which seems high.

The Speer data is worked up with their bullets. If you are using the Speer 124 grain then you are using a max load and you will probably get better accuracy at a slightly lower loading.

Hodgdon, Lyman, Speer, Sierra, Hornady = reliable resources
so and so's pages on the internet = not reliable resources
Alway check loads you find on the internet against manuals.
NEVER exceed maximum listed loads.

My older Lyman manuals show 5.8 gns of Unique to be max under the 124 gn slug, with 5.5 as being the factory duplication load and the accuracy load for the 124 gn fmj.  HTH.  Mikey.

why is there such a difference between loading data? is it the specific components, or perhaps inconsistencies in powder? I think i will move down to 4.8 and test the load. thanks for all info guys.
