What say you H & R 45-70

Just would like some in put I seen a new H & R 22 inch barrel with scope base for 225 out the door I have one of there old 410's but haven't picked up one in a while let alone shoot one lets here the good, bad and ugly. The reason is they open up the muzzleloader season to these (single shot break open over 38 cal rifle) here in Louisiana and I may get the itch for one

It's a great choice, I have five H&R 45-70s if that tells ya anything!! ;) It's one of the most popular H&R chamberings here and real popular in Mississippi for their "primitive weapons" deer season.  Everyone should have at least one 45-70!!  ;D

If it's new, $225 out-the-door sounds good to me.  Out here, you are looking at $230 + 6% sales tax.

From a Mississippi'ans perspective thats a good price for a new rifle.  Your sales tax rate is higher than ours, so lock stock and barrel, not bad at all.  I would recommend a Buffalo Classic when the opportunity arises, I have never been happier with a gun in my life.  Oh yeh, btw if you've never shot a 45-70, or shot a deer with one, get ready to be surprised! ;D

I have four .45/70s. I don't think there is a better short to mid range whitetail cartridge out there. There is nothing like a big heavy "thumper" to get the animal down in a hurry. The .38/55 would be my second choice, BTW. Mike

I got my 45-70 for $50 from a buddy of mine. He was going to Iraq and the deal was he would get it back for the same price. He ended up not going and he said to keep it. Best gun deal I've had.

My 45/70 barrel is my favorite, is not picky about what I feed it and would be the very last barrel I would get rid of.  In other words I like it.  With trapdoor loads is is a great paper killer and with a 300 gr hard cast and a good load of 2400 it kills deer also.

The .45-70 is probably the most accurate Handi caliber.  You can't go wrong.

I don't know about "short to mid-range"  Mine shoots 300 yards just fine.  It takes a moment to get there, but it gets the job done well when it arrives.

I've only test fired mine so far, going to try some loads that aren't so speedy.  they were some of the +P made by PMC several years ago.  They used to give me a headache shooting them in my lever gun.  Not real bad in the handi thanks to the Limbsaver slip-on pad.  that is one fine product, does what it says.  Around here, they raised the price $10.00 on all NEFs to $249.95 for pallet wood. :(  DP.

Sorry, Petemi, I'm used to Palma distances. I've had good luck with my #1 rolling block sporter at 500. It's fun to be able to touch off a round and have time to lower the rifle before the round gets to the target.

Yeah, you can recover from the recoil and watch the round hit.  BTW the 325 gr. Hornady L.E.s shoot great in mine.

Haven't tried those. I have a few hundred rounds of .45/70 brass that I need to reload, I may try some. I hate to reload, so I wait until I'm just about shot out of a particular round before I set down to do it.
