Knight Kid Load
« on: July 06, 2008, 04:23:52 PM »
My six year old draws a deer hunt that requires the use of a shotgun or muzzleloader. He killed a doe last year at 5 w/ a 223 Rossi single shot.

I have a Knight inline that I have always used powerbelt & 100 grains of pyrodex pellets. My ? is could I load one pellet & it be effective out to 75 yds or would a single shot 410 w/ slug be better. Which one would have more recoil?

Thanks!

It would be fine. The recoil would be less than the 223 and it would reach further than the 410. Don't know about the 410's recoil compared to the Knight.
The sportsman lives his life vicariously. For he secretly yearns to have lived before, in a simpler time. A time when his love for the land, water, fish and wildlife would be more than just part of his life. It would be his state of mind

Ripmyfly,  I'm in the same process too with my 9 yoa.  He's hunted the last two years with a .410 mossy 500, but of course no accuracy.  Now that he is big enough for a little recoil,  I've been working a load on my LK-93 and a thick slip on recoil pad.  I tried the loads first myself.  My normal bullet is a 300 grain. .45 XTP and tried it with 50 of RS, it had way too much kick.  Tried some 200 grain .44 lead solids with 40 and 50 of RS and a 50gr pellet of 777.  The 777 had the least amount of kick and went with 777 pellet.  So I put 4/5 shots under 1.5 inches at 25 and my boy had 2 bullseyes at 50 yards. with a 4x32 scope.  However his hunting load will be a Hornady .50, 180 grain .44XTP and one 50gr pellet.  The lighter the bullet the better, should have enough power under 75 yards which is all these boys need.  good luck

my 10 yoa got his first deer on 12-6-08, a 160lb doe.  50 grains of RS loose, the 180 gr XTP at 65 yards through the heart and through the other shoulder.  Ran about about 40/50 yards and dropped.  No blood trail whatsoever in the snow and no expansion.  The lack of expansion suprised me however.  Next year he should be able to handle a 240 or a .45 250 and 60 grains.  By the way Toby Bridges ran an excellant article in September (i think) 08 issue of fur-fish-game on reduced bp loads for youth.
