Business as usual.......probably not.  But actually, I would expect an improvement.

Why close down a perfectly good working operation unless your intention is to improve it and possibly save cost?  Otherwise, why go to the problems you will create if what you have is working and cost effective?  The transitional phase should be transparent to the customer.  If it isn't, then someone did not do their job correctly on the front end.

My opinion for what it's worth..........

I'm sure the new plant will eventually be up to speed, but realistically I'm not surprised it's taking them some time to get going.

You asked why closed down an operation unless your intention is to improve it and POSSIBLY SAVE COST?  I would say you have that a bit backwards.  You shut down a separate facility to DEFINETLY save cost and provide the same level (or better) service.   But a new facility, with mostly new employees just isn't going to be as fast as the other plant was (at least not now).

Let's be honest, handi-rifles can't be a huge margin product and Remington could just as easily shut down the entire line and/or the barrel program or had them manufactured overseas.

Again, I'm sure with time, things will return to normal (or maybe better).  But to think there weren't going to be glitches, errors, or delays just doesn't seem realistic to me.

Have a good day,

Jim

I definitely agree with the statement that barrels will take 6 - 8 weeks or more.  My frame has been at NEF for 6 weeks as of this past Monday, and as I posted before NEF is saying it will be another 6 - 8 weeks.  I'm lucky since the barrels I'm looking for are still in stock.  I expected there would be problems with the change which is why I had my frame at NEF prior to the 6/20 cut-off date for having Gardener install the barrels (this was per NEF Customer Service at Gardener).  My guess is there was a change in policy from Remington that the Gardener folks weren't told about.  I've waited months in the past for barrels, but never had this much trouble getting answers or estimates from the folks at Gardener.   My reason for posting was to provide information on my experience with the new NEF barrel program, just the facts.  That being said, for those interested in what did I expect: PROBLEMS.

Considering H&R had been doing their thing for several decades in Gardner and only a handful of those experienced employees moved to Ilion, it's not a bit surprising they're getting a slow start, hang in there, there are some nice improvements in store for us that I can't share at this time, but I think they will be well worth the wait once they get settled. ;)

I finally got to talk to someone. I was told my gun was in packing and I should receive it within the week. Looking for the brown truck.

I would expect that since Remington has a real engineering department they will fix some of the sucky things in the tooling and processes used to manufacture these rifles.  Remington already has manufacturing processes in place to do a lot of the things that it takes to make these rifles. I suspect they will just route the H&Rs through the Remington processes and you will be better fit, finish and raw materials. You can bet one thing. Remington will not dumb down it's existing processes to match the H&R standards. Rather the H&R will be brought up to Remington's standards.

I speculate we will get much better barrels with better underlugs.
The underlugs will be made of better alloys and will be attached using a more consistent and better looking welding process.
In turn the tolerances will be held closer when they machine the lugs and the receivers.
They may change the receiver castings some to provide better control of the machining.
I would also bet that the surface finish of the barrels gets improved from the H&R 60 grit belted finish to the finish put on a 700 barrel.
Some of the internal parts of the H&Rs lock work appear to be powdered metal parts. Remington has been in the powdered metal parts business for 30 or 40 years. I suspect they will take over the powdered metal parts too.

TIM you can PM me if I am close and I will not spill a word. :-X

Just got told for the third time it would be two more weeks before I got my gun back. Same thing I got told two weeks ago and two weeks before that. If it is ready in two weeks that will make 11 weeks total. So much for getting any range time in this summer with the new Huntsman barrel.

Last week I was told my gun was in packing and should arrive soon. I called today and was told it was still at the work desk. What is going on ? I can understand the slowness but not the different stories. So far I'm not impressed. I spoke with a women that seem more helpful than the man who just seemed to want to get rid of me.

They actually told me the first time I called in (when I found out from this site that the Gardner plant closed) that it had been shipped out to me already. Then they e-mailed and said "oops, we ment we mailed it to Ilion, not you".

I'm not impressed either.

I've read thru this thread and no one has hinted at the realities associated with moving a FFL holder to another location (Gardner to Llion, NY). There's  oversight by ATF and both manufacturers are obligated to comply.
Basically, the ATF rules state that the FFL holder needs to return the firearm to the party that originally sent it. So, depending on the "cut-off" dates involved, if a gun was sent to Gardner and then repaired at Remington - the gun must then be returned to Gardner before being returned to the owner. This alone would influence the long wait time.
Is this poor customer service too, or do we chalk it up to excessive government regulations? :-\

It doesn't have too get shipped back to Gardner, since the company is a single entity (Remington) that is the sole holder of the FFL invloved.

Sounds to me like it wouldn't or couldn't even be considered an H&R/NEF anymore. Just put "Remington" on it and be done with it.

'Just put "Remington" on it and be done with it.'

I'd like that.  I've been a huge Remington fan for over 45 years.

For that to happen they would have had to changed the frame or changed out the hinge pin. It will have to go back for repair unless you want to fix it yourself.  :-\

Man am I happy that I decided to buy the 444 and have them send my receiver back.   ;D

I don't understand why if you send in to get a new barrel fitted that they would modify the receiver so that any other barrel might not fit.   ???

Oh well....

If you sent a rifle in for repair, you should have asked to be reimbursed for the shipping or asked for a call tag before you shipped it. They can still reimburse you for the shipping cost.  Gardner was real good about doing one or the other. In this situation which is similar to Lonewolf's, I'd contact them, explain what has happened and ask for them to cover the shipping cost by reimbursement or a call tag, keep your cool and be nice, being short with them will get you nothing but higher blood pressure! :o While there's no excuse for them to make changes to the frame, they're in a transitional state at the time and stuff happens unfortunatley. Call them and ask them nicely to make it right.  ;)

A copy of the bill for shipping made to

One thing a fair number of people seem to not be quite realizing here is that Remington didn't bother to put anything on the Barrel Accessory order page or form about the transition.  I only found out about the change over AFTER I sent them my receiver. Prior to June 20th you had to click on "Company News" to find anything about Remington's consolidation plan.

Got told today that my rifle has been in packing since Tuesday because they RAN OUT OF BOXES. They told me it would ship out next Monday or Tuesday. They ran out of boxes for a week in there shipping department.  Who runs a business like that?

"Who runs a business like that?"

Sounds about like most of the companies I've ever worked for.  The one I currently work for, once laid off everyone in the shipping & receiving department in same day.

You'll get your gun.

It's a Huntsman barrel job. Blackpowder season is the second week of October.  Starting to feel the strain.  But the real aggravation is the sheer incompetence of the responses from the company. I get so many conflicting answers/explanations.....
