Ruger mini 14
« on: July 07, 2008, 10:15:56 AM »
I have aquired a mini 14 in .223 that is in a little rough shape, a cracked gas bock and stock. It still shoots pretty good...pretty good off hand, open sights @ 50 yards. I probably won't shoot it again unless I repair/customize it. I already have a .223 Bushmaster AR-15 that I would use over it anyway. I was wondering if it could be converted to another caliber. If I were to have some work done to it, I'd rather it be something I would use more. Any chance of it being converted to a straight walled pistol caliber...357, .44, .45?

Thank you,

Brian

No pistol calibers but 6X45 or 204 Ruger or something similar work pretty well. Basically something about the same length and same case head size. If you want a pistol caliber carbine it's way easier and cheaper to buy a Ruger PC carbine or build an AR-15 to do that.

Thank you for the info. Yeah, I do recall now that Bushmaster has an upper for that...45 Bushmaster, I think. Very interesting.

Thanks again!

the 45 Bushmaster is NOT a pistol caliber. It is intended as a short range big game cartridge.

Yes, I am aware that that caliber is not a pistol caliber, but is as close to what I was looking for as I'll probably get...a large diameter, slower moving, heavy projectile. Something heavier for, fairly close, big game hunting.

Thank you!

You might check out Alexander Arms' 50 Beowulf as well. Pretty much a lengthened 50 AE with a rebated rim to fit the AR bolt. Lots of close up hitting power, about like a 50-70.
