150 gr. vs 180 gr. Federal Hi Shok SPs.
« on: July 07, 2008, 12:09:29 PM »
I was trying to do some serious shake down shooting with my new, .30-06 stainless barrel.  I was shooting Federal Hi Shok soft points and couldn't get it to shoot the 150s at all.  They were all over, and I thought it was me, or it was the rifle or what???  I ran out of 150s and loaded 180s.  End of problem.  Click by click the bullets marched to their assigned destination.  Anybody got a clue why?  It's my guess the 180s have a better BC.

Or it could have been the load, rate of twist, harmonics, Saturns relationship to Mars, how you were holding your mouth, type of powder, and so on and on and on.

Try some 165 grains and see if they shoot.  If they do it could well be your rifle doesn't like the short bullets.

Mike, I think I'll stick with the 180s, the rifle seems to like them.  If the weather dries up tomorrow, I'll know for sure.  I'll stretch them to 200 yards and see what they do.  I'd like it to do well at that distance.  Wind is the major problem here, 25 - 35 yesterday.  You really have to shoot before 7 a.m. right now.

My Handi .30-06 has never shot 150's of any brand as well as 180 grain Federal Hi Shok or Power Shok's.  The 150's shot well enough for deer hunting, but the 180's are much better.  ;)

Several years ago when I bought mine there was more discussion about the '06 that has been of late.  If I recall, many found the 150's performed better.  I remember thinking I must have an odd ball.   ;D

If you like 150's try other brands, they may work out equally well as the 180's Then of course you can re-load which opens up a whole new world.
What is the point of Life if you can't have fun.

My '06 Handi did the same thing. Couldn't adjust my scope enough to shoot 150's or 165's. Switched to Hornady 180 roundnose and had to readjust my scope back. I'm going to try spire points this year.

Yeahbut, the flyer wasn't the 3rd round, it was the second and the velocity was quite a bit different, the first and third shots were right at 3000fps +/- a couple fps.  :-\ Maybe just a fluke, it was the last of the box, so I didn't get to shoot any more, next batch will be handloads.

I guess you and I have the same odd ball.  Man, the 150's were all over the place.
