Look what I found on my desk at work today! ;D
« on: July 07, 2008, 04:08:27 PM »
I  worked on a friends house who does wood turning,
I asked him to turn something for me in exchange for my work
This morning I found this on my desk waiting for me  ;D

Meet Woody! ( complete with 1 lb powder can is there for scale)

This is the start of my wood form for sand casting a bronze Coehorn mortar  ;D

I'll post photo's as the form continues to take shape.

next I have to find out if the local foundry will do small orders.........

Looks good!

What scale is that? What is your proposed bore diameter?

The minor diameter is 4 3/4"  and the major diameter is 5 1/8" overall length 9" I am thinking this should be enough for a sodacan 2.65 Dia.

Nice wood pattern for your mortar. Making patterns like that is becoming almost a lost art. I've seen wooden patters for pump castings, flywheels and yes even for manhole covers. Frank

If the local foundry won't do a short run, try to find someone who caters to sculptors as they seldom do multiples of a given piece.

Well I had a few minutes  to spare before I left work so I ran into the wood shop and did a little work on the mortar

First i found center and marked the area to be scored with the band saw

next I made a series of cuts and then used one of my stock making gouges to remove the material to the contour,

when finished it wasn't deep enough so I went back to the band saw to score it deeper,

Then I got brave and decided to try contouring it with the bandsaw!

once done I opened it up a little with the stock making gouge

Here it is with the trunnion set in place, now that I see it in the photo
I want it a little deeper into the base of the mortar so tomorrow I'll
cut it a little deeper. At least now it is starting to look like a mortar  :)

It should go in to about half the diameter of the trunnion.

Yep, that's what I was thinking.
