38-55 heavy cast in Marlin Cowboy
« on: July 08, 2008, 08:26:11 AM »
Howdy!
I just bought a 38-55 Cowboy...  I'm wondering if anyone has had any luck using either the Saeco 571 300 grainer or the Lyman 378674 335 grainer.  I'm looking for a heavy boolit for next year's Quigley.  I shot an H&R Target 38-55 and 240's this year and the wind blew me all over the place...
Thanks,
Dusty

Howdy,
Your biggest concern will be overall cartridge length, and I don't think you can pull it off with sillhouette bullets. The heaviest bullets that I can think of are some Magnus 270-grain flat-nose bullets that I bought from Midsouth Shooters Supply. Those take up an awful lot of space inside the case. Also, I don't know if you can  get them for your oversized bore or not. Out of a Marlin, a soft .379" Lyman plain-base usually works pretty well.

The 38-55 cowboy is out of production, but Marlin can/will rebuild a 30-30 336 into one for you. Get in touch with there customer service.
