First Time

I'm heading back home to central Illinois where my new H&R 223 Ultra Hunter is waiting for me.  I plan on siting it in as soon as I get home on Friday and going to shoot some yotes on Saturday Morning.  I have a homemade ecaller that I made from plans in the forum and a nice tripod stand set in the edge of the woods overlooking a field.  Not looking to kill hundreds but looking to see what happens.  Any advice?

If it is your first time out I would set your goals a little lower, like seeing one.  Larry

I understand the success rate is pretty slim and from all the reading I have been doing on here and other websites, I probably wont even see one my first few times out until I get some of the bugs worked out.  The place I will be going has known coyotes and foxes (shot at the fox one year for stealing ducks) and I know for a fact that it is not hunted at all.  Plus with the e caller with a 50 yard cord, I'll be able to be in a tripod in the edge of the woods with the caller in the edge of a field.  From the tripod I should be able to see about 400 yards.  My biggest question is what kind of calls to use during the summer months when food is very prevalent?  I know they are not denning by now but hopefully I'll get a curious one to come out.

Especially considering that the corn is high and the beans as well as the grasses along the drainages are growing fast...
Sounds like you have a good vantage point and perhaps a hay field or new beans to look over?. The early times from 5:00am to 8:00am may be the best before it starts heating up for the day.
Don't call the same area too often with the same sound or they will figure you out pretty quick. I usually dont do any calling till the fur primes up around the start of the Red/Gray Fox season except for
Problem Coyotes that haze live stock areas or barn yards. They (the Coyotes) do need thinned down some though and I see nothing wrong with just giving one a dirt nap.

Dont overlook your Varmint shooting as you may have plenty of groundhogs in your area...looking for damage to the young Soybean plants along the wooded edges could give you some great shooting.

Thanks for the great advice Glanceblamm.  I agree with the waiting till fall idea because I want to save a few furs, but seeing as how I am just getting into it I want to cut my teeth a bit before it gets to be prime time.  I shouldn't have to much trouble calling the same place too often because I am going to school in Illinois down by St. Louis and only make it home to east central Illinois 1 to 2 times per month.  If it becomes as much fun as I hope, I will find a few more stands this fall on the property north of town where I deer hunt.  and about what's in the fields, I'm not sure what they have planted out behind my house, hopefully beans.  I think maybe the field beside my house was winter wheat and if thats the case it should be cut or close to it.  From my tripod I can see about 3 different tree lines and plenty of cover.  Weird situation but basically I hunt over where 3 different fields meet.  Might do some scouting for some ghogs if I get a chance.  Not sure how much free time I'll get, my mom has a broken foot and my dad is building a deck out back so between cooking for my mom and helping my dad with the deck I might not have too much time cept in the mornings.  Not being one to set myself up for failure, I know there is a very good chance that I wont see one.  But if I don't see one now, and learn what I did wrong from you guys, maybe I'll get a chance to get one this fall.  Thanks again for all your information.  I'll let you know what, if anything, happens this weekend.

P.S.  I talked my girlfriend into going with me, she deer hunts but had a hard time getting talked into shooting something that is so dog like.  She said as long as it doesn't yelp she'll be alright with it....that is until she actually sees one, then she may turn bunny hugger on me...

Very politely said Larry, but isn't noobie youth fun?   Kind of makes me wish I could go back 5 decades and start all over again.    ;)

Matt, I'll add that if you really want to get started right, obtain and learn how to use a mouth call.   Anybody can push buttons, but real predator hunters pit their own acquired skills one-on-one against them.    You are embarking on a journey that has been one of the most enjoyable pastimes in my life.   I hope it is for you as well.

Not to worry Matt, Once she see's one slipping in she will think that it is every bit as good as seeing a deer coming down the trail.
They can have a chilling demeaner (especially our large eastern types) with those yellow eyes that seem to look right through you. What can really be worth seeing is that look of deadly intent turn into wide eyed suprise if they figure out what you are.
Just try to remain motionless. if you move your head at all, pretend like you have a stiff neck. Using the full pheriprial vision of your eyes will help greatly on picking out the more subtle movements of the incoming.

Ug I'm about to burst, I'm not going home until tomorrow evening.  Hopefully I get my rifle sighted in tomorrow night before it gets dark.  Reading your posts isn't curbing my enthusiasm whatsoever.  It's about to drive me to leave work and my girlfriend here right now and go home lol....but only being a Co-op, not working means not being paid....darn the shenanigans of the corporate world.....

I have not had that happen but my old hunting partner had that identical experience just last fall with his 209x50. His was an 80yd shot and he was using the T/C bullet (dont remember the grains) in the Sabot.
I believe that he had it loaded hot with 3 pellets and the Coyote went right down but not before yelping. Of special intrest was that the yote had a large hole in the hide where the bullet first struck. I know that the hide
Is thin and delicate and you could about use a butter knife while slipping the hide off the carcuss (read tears easily) but you wouldn't think that the (Deer Class) bullet would have blown (or expanded) that much on impact nor would it have had enough velocity for this to have been hydro damage. ???

I was running 2 pellets behind a 240 grain xtp w/ 25 acp ignition. I don't know why it would make that big of a hole, maybe he deformed the bullet when he started it, or if in cover maybe hit a leaf or twig and tumbled? I had a good clean hole in and pass thru hole wasn't that big. It was only a 15 yard shot though if that far.

Makes Good Sense To Me...It about had to be one of those two and I favor the latter as his was near a dead fall.

Made it home tonight but was unable to make it out back before it got dark, plus it was drizzeling all evening.  I did however get the scope mounted and bore sighted so I'll go out early tomorrow and get it sighted in maybe for some evening hunting tomorrow and sunday morning.  Woot!

Well I have some good news and some bad news...

The good news is that I got my rifle sighted in today and I have it all ready to send off to get a slug barrel fitted to it.

The bad news is that it rained yesterday so I couldn't finish sighting my gun in and because my dad was building a deck on our house, we did that all weekend and did not get a chance to go sit out at all. 

Another bit of good news is that I talked to my brother and he knows of a place north of town that is eat up with coyotes that we can hunt.  So in the next month or so, we might be able to go up there and shoot some.  Between my receiver going back to the factory, working in St. Louis, and my brother dealing with his own stuff, who knows when we'll be able to get up there, but hopefully it is soon. 

One thing is for sure, because we didn't get to go, my girlfriend is not deterred from going, for now...

P.S. The only way you are getting a picture of her is if she kills one, so you better hope she doesn't get cold feet...
