Hello to all--this is my first post in your forum. I tried a search (actually about five of them) to see if I could find an answer to this question already posted, and I also looked to see if there was a forum devoted to gunsmithing. Didn't find what I am looking for, so I decided to try lever-action rifles. Hope it's not too spammy and that you'll bear with a new guy!
I recently bought a nice used Marlin 336 that came drilled and tapped for both a Lyman peep sight and a Leupold scope mount. I want to use the peep sight, so I took off the Leupold base and rings. After I put the peep sight back on, there are going to be some nice see-through tappings where the forward base screws were. Also, there will be open holes under the peep sight on top of the receiver. It's not looks I'm concerned about, it's rain--the holes are right over the bolt and look like they'll make perfect little drains to let water into the action if I'm hunting on a wet day.
As you can see, I'm no great shakes as a gunsmith. Do I get some dummy screws to fit into the holes? Say at Brownell's? And if so, how do I tell the correct size to order?
