gramndpa would'nt allow it when i was a kid said they needed to produce young and they were scarce in those days.

i went a few times tried my luck for once with a handgun got lucky. killed 1 killed 3 with a shotgun also. and saw many more that were way to far. there were plenty of squirrels.
