I have the opportunity to pick up a 9.3 X 72R for cheep money.  The rifle is a beautiful stalking rifle in great shape.  Is it advisable or feasible to convert 9.3 X 72R to 9.3 X 74R or can you resize 9.3 X 74R into 9.3 X 72R?

Thanks,

Rechambering will likely destroy any collector's value to the gun.  Most collectors of these guns like them original in the original caliber.  Is it a single shot, or a combination rifle/shotgun?

Brass and ammo is not widely available nor cheap in either cartridge.  Make sure which 9.3x72R you have.  There is a Sauer version with a slight bottleneck to the cartridge.

Why not do an internet search on the cartridge, brass and bullet availability, and ammo costs before you consider a rechambering?

I would say very definitely NO! It would be like rechambering a .35 Remington to .350 Rem Mag, it is doubtful that a rifle built for the first would be strong enough for the second. The 9.3x72 is an old black powder round and modern smokeless loads are held to very low pressure. That is why they were able to be used in light weight stalking rifles and drillings, ballistics are in the .35 Remington league. The 9.3x74 is a much hotter round, not much short of the .375 H&H. I very much doubt that a rifle built for the 9.3x72 could handle the 9.3x74. I once had, and wish I still have, an old Ed Kettner hammer drilling in double 16 gauge and 9.3x72. I am quite certain that little gun could not have handled the 9.3x74.
The story of David & Goliath only demonstrates the superiority of ballistic projectiles over hand weapons, poor old Goliath never had a chance.
