Lee Auto Prime. Old Dog learnt a new trick
« on: July 12, 2008, 07:31:47 AM »
:D  I may be the last person in the world to learn this but this past week end I was at a match and I watched a fellow prime some of his cases.  When he was finished, he took a small rubber band and wrapped it around the handle and lever of the Lee Auto Prime so the lever was pressed against the handle.  This way the plunger was up in the primer cavity so no primers could leak out and the whole unit was easier to stow.
Well Duh, I've been using a Lee unit since they came out and never thougt of that.  For those three other people that are as slow as I am, now we know. :D

I took a small piece of cardboard the width of the lever and electrical taped it to the outside of the lever.  Now, it doesn't cut into my fingers and I found I had more leverage with better feel on seating.  Looks like another tip I can use with the rubber band and no I didnt think of that one either.

I put a couple of nails close to the edge of a shelf that would hold the pan on the shelf and let the handle hang over. If I had thought of a rubber band on the handle I would probably be storeing it that way now.

What do you all think of the RCBS hand primer. I bought one because Lee doesn't have shell holders that fit all cartridges well. But to me comparing the two this is a case where chieper and simpler is also far superior. My biggest gripe is that the RCBS is hard to use. It has so large a gap that my hand gets tired after seating only a few primers. Another gripe is that it is a real pain to change primer sizes.

I have four of the hand priming tools, three of them are Lee and the forth is RCBS. I store them in my cabinet with the levers secured with rubber bands. Just don't turn them upside down or the priming punch will fall out.
