It's Rug-AIRE, not Rug-ER!
« on: July 13, 2008, 06:54:55 AM »
It's pronounced Rug-AIRE, not Rug-ER!

When will you rural gun-toting Bible-loving rednecks learn to speak French!?!?

Originally a French company, Rug-AIRE was surrendered by Guy de Maupissant to Yohcemitee Sahmuel at the Battle of Jonquiere during the French-Indian war, in 1754.

We rural gun-toting rednecks don't need to learn to speak French, Spanish, Mexican, Ebola, or any other language except English or American, if you prefer.  And you are in error on your pronunciation with regard to Sturm, Ruger, Inc., the original company and not Rug-Aire, as you related.  One of the partners in this Company referred to his name as Ruuuger, with the accent on the first syllable.  As for your city dwelling do good attitude toward others, one should first be factually accurate, or is this too difficult a concept for an educated illiterate.

The correct pronunciation is "Rue-grr", as in "Luger".

William B. Ruger Sr.'s father was a trial lawyer in Northern Germany, prior to coming to America before Bill was born in Brooklyn, NY.
His mother was from a New York merchandising family.

We probably shouldn't joke about furriners owning American companies.  Today the Belgians just bought Anheuser-Busch - no joke!

Maybe they can improve the quality some.  :)  European beer typically is a lot better than our mainstream stuff.  Sam Adams along with some other micro-breweries have been improving our image some though :).

And as to the OP - if Ruger had been a French word (which it isn't), I"m pretty sure the pronunciation would be "rouge-ay".  Je parle un peu de Français.  (actually my family is originally from the southern region of France known as Gascony - we've been over here in America for several hundred years though :)).

I have always said say ko  But I heard that it is actually saw ko. Best to say things the right way. We have young folks doing the local Wyoming news who can't pronounce Wyoming place names. To me that ought to be a job requirement.

This IS a spoof posting!!!

I actually meant it to tie in with Barack Hussein Obama's latest remarks (in Powder Springs,  Georgia) about how he's again embarrassed to be an American.  These are Obama's direct quotes;

"...you need to make sure that your child can speak Spanish..."
And
"It’s embarrassing when Europeans come over here, they all speak English, they speak French, they speak German. And then we go over to Europe and all we can say is merci beaucoup."

To be fair, Obama did say earlier that;
"...I agree that immigrants should learn English..."

Hear the excerpt from his speech here;

Forgive me but I cannot help myself from pointing out that if not for the American GI, all of Europe might now be speaking German as a first language.  I expect that Barack Hussein Obama, his wife, his preacher, and Jesse Jackson would disagree with that (or don't know much about it, or wouldn't care) but it is darn well true!  America remains everything that President Ronald Reagan and many others said it is, and detractors like Obama and Jackson are beneficiaries of the very system they criticize.

2008 is an election year in which gun owners need to participate.  My wife and I spent most of Saturday going door-to-door for a pro-gun candidate for the state legislature.  On Sunday, my wife set up a voter registration table at a local church; as a registrar she hits a different church every Sunday.  Last week we attended a fundraiser held for a US Senator who is backed by the NRA and in a tough race against an anti-gun challenger.  Also, we walked in the 4th of July parade tossing candy to the crowd as part of the election campaign for a pro-gun candidate for the US House of Representatives.  My front yard has signs for 3 pro-gun candidates and soon there will be additional signs.  We can never do enough but we need to do as much as we can to keep guns in the forefront of  these campaigns and to have pro-gun candidates win.  Thank you for your time.

Ah. Didn't know this post was a spoof as I don't often listen to any of Obama's speeches :0. In all fairness (though I'm pretty anti-Obama based on his firearms positions), it IS a great benefit to be multilingual.  Be that extra language Spanish, French, German, Japanese, or Swahili for all it matters.  Nothing wrong with expanding one's horizons and learning another language.

It's also kinda unfair to take his remark about saying that our educational state is embarrassing as him saying he's embarrassed to be American.  There certainly IS a lot wrong with our educational system (among many other things).  I'm sure there are things about our country that you can say you're embarrassed about even if you're not embarrassed to be an American.  The Republican/Democrat distinction usually only denotates which areas one sees problems in, not whether or not you see problems at all ;).

I think I have to appologize for my previous post here.  I obviously didn't recognize the phonic pronunciation of the French and that it was in jest.  My dimwittedness in this instance.  I read it rapidly in a heated moment from another post and thought is was a slam and Elmer Fudd perception of rural people by city dwellers.  My mistake and response, was not justifiable.

It will be a poorer world indeed when our southern cousins have watched so much TV that they loose their language.

If you have noticed the Ruger marked air rifles lately, the pronunciation may have changed.... except for the fact that the air rifles are Chinese.....

My stepson is a big Auburn fan. My wife found a picture of him when he was 5 years old wearing an Alabama shirt. She loves Alabama and made an attempt when he was a child to convert him. It did not work. The war started in my house 2 days ago when she drug out the old picture.
