I wanna cannon to play with
« on: July 13, 2008, 11:14:03 AM »
I`d like one of the kit cannons that`ll fire maybe a 50cal muzzleloader ball. What can I get ?  This looks like a world of fun. Also is it possible to get plans that`ll use a pistol barrel ?  I`m just throwing ideas out their, so if it`s a stupid one please feel free and comment.

Small bore cannons come up fairly frequently on ebay as "signal", "model" or even "toy" cannons. Some of these are actually designed to fire balls (just make sure that it IS safe to use with balls before you buy). I just got this .50 one through ebay recently.

There are a few small cannons made from the old CVA kits running right now. I'd keep an eye out over there as one source; you can sometimes get one for a good deal.

Have a look at the small cannons made by one of the makers at the top of the page here - Carpenter's Replica Artillery. He can make you anything you want and does a good job for a reasonable price.

Visit the sticky's at the top of our forum listing our sponsers.  Check with them and ses what they can do for you.

My guess is that you will be more than happy with their products.

Hey Burch!
Sounds to me like you are ready for some backyard cannon fun!  We have really enjoyed the Backyard Cannon Fun thread in this forum. I have been particularly impressed with the members' focus on safety and fun, family entertainment.   The thread is lengthy, but if you fly through it you will get an idea of some of the cannon available from us at brooks-USA.com and from other GBO sponsors. You will see many a start-up project and some neat videos.

As you know it is absolutely imperative you start this project with a good quality barrel, but there are many options for the carriage or skid. If you have woodworking skills, you can make your own skid or carriage.  Or we offer what we call a utility skid...a  nice looking solid oak skid that won't break the bank....you can always upgrade to a more historically accurate carriage later if you want (our barrels are made to last and you can find a sponsor here at GBO to make a beautiful one for you).

Please let me know if I can be of any help as you get started on this new venture.  A word of caution:  the sport of black powder cannon is quite addictive!  Enjoy!

I've got a Brooks mortar what great fun . I'm working a deal with Dom Carpenter , he really works with you to get what you want . Plus I saw one of his 17 inch (long) Dalgrens it was real nice .

I've got to get to the backyard forum and post on the little mortar .

I am actually going to be serious here. There are alot of great sponsors here. Do alot of research these boards help. Don't buy one of those E-bay display cannons (thats a grenade) not a cannon. Too much powder doesn't always mean good.  (I did do a proof load of 100 grains ffg on one of the Irishmans barrels which I will post in the future. It was one of his heavy duty barrels but it was done in controled envirement. Yes Michael (Brooks) that barrel is overbuilt. And is still in excellent condition except the quion flew off and I lost it.<Sorry I am rambling like usual. I will just add don't do this at home kids.
But seriously when you do launch a projectile Just like in any firearm make sure 110% where it is going to end up because once it leaves the barrel you can't call it back and oops it was a good idea at the time is not an excuse.
Just research have fun and be safe
