Loose bolt on 336--Help!
« on: July 13, 2008, 09:21:37 PM »
Greetings all-
Recently I picked up a used, but not abused, 336A in .35 at an auction for $95!   :D  I've cleaned it up and shot it and I am looking forward to perforating some deer with it soon . My question is this:  I noted that on an empty chamber, I can push the bolt and it will move in maybe 1/16".  It will not do this with a round chambered.  Is this normal or do I need to be worried?  I also noted that the stocks are much "fuller" on this older gun that on the newer ones I've seen.

That's a very dangerous rifle you got there, pilgrim (and it's overweight, too) - If you UPS it to me, I'll take a look at it for you.  ;)

I checked my 336 in 30-30 tonight...Its got a little slack as you described...If you cycle the action and put pressure on the back of the bolt you can feel it move just a little....

I was at an auction and they stopped at $90...going once...I thought I had misunderstood him the first time, but got my paddle up in time.  I also got a Lee pro 1000 loader and two sets of carbide dies and a spare carrier assembly for $60.  I must have been extra good that week!
If I could get a few more readers to check their rifles and report back what they find, I would appreciate it.  --Cheers

Ok, I just checked all 5 of my Marlins, and all of them move just a tiny bit when I cycle the action and push on the bolt.  None of them move 1/16", just barely enough to tell they move.  Have you fired the 35 yet?  If there is no movement with a round chambered, no problem I would guess.  Just make sure you check the cases carefully after you fire them.  Use a micrometer before and after on a few cases, mark the ones you checked with a magic marker to track them.  Let us hear what you think about your 35 Rem after you play with her.  Mine's as much fun as my 357 mags! ;D  DP.
