Anyone ever take more than one gun per person into canada?
« on: July 14, 2008, 03:28:42 AM »
Last year when I went hunting in Canada we didn't have any problems with our guns going over the border.  This year I am thinking about taking an extra rifle because I'm not too sure on what the guide is calling 100 yards.  I have always thought that taking an extra rifle wouldn't be a bad idea when traveling far away in case some freak accident should occur.

Has anyone taken more than one rifle per man into Canada?  In this case there would be two guys and 3 rifles (2 bolt action 30-06, and one 30-30).

Sorry about the late response, I just noticed your post.
Yes, I have taken up to 3 rifles with me going up from Wa. State into B.C., The form you fill out at Canadian Customs as you cross has provisions for listing mutliple weapons. The last time I crossed, about 2 years ago, one fee was charged, good for 60 days ( I think ) and the number of rifles made no difference. I might mention that I took a .22 for grouse, and two Centerfire for big game.
Keep in mind that the minimum barrel length in Canada is 18", vs U.S. 16", and they can be persnickity about magazines that hold more then 5 rounds ( I once brought a marlin '94 in .44 Mag that holds 10 in the tube, and I had some problems getting it across). And, of course , no so-called "assault rifles". BOY, I HATE THAT TERM!! Should be "military look-alikes that function only in semi-auto mode, same as any other less sinister looking rifle, used by many sportsmen due to it's ruggedness and ease of handling"!!!

GatCat,
Thanks for the info.  When I I went into Ontario canada last year the form I had to fill out had a place for three firearms on it and it was also good for 60 days.  I keep changing my mind so much about what rifle I'm going to take and use, but I think I've finally decided on my 30-06.  There will be two of guys going on this trip and I was thinking of taking another rifle as a backup.  Last year I took my leveraction Marlin 30-30 and it holds 7 rounds and I didn't have any troubles getting through the border.  My hunting buddy & I will both be taking our 30-06's but I was thinking about taking that 30-30 also, or a puma 20" 44mag just in case something should happen to either of the other rifles or their scopes.

If you can show them that the same rifle is sold in Canada in regards to cal. magazine capacity and barrel lenght you should not have any trouble. The 06 will handle anything you want to hunt there.
Last I looked the rifle barrel will have to be 18+ 1/2 inch. They are very picky about that.

I'm counting on my 30-06 to be my rifle.  Maybe I'll just take an extra scope in case something should happen.  That'd be easier than taking another gun anyway.

I always "plan for the worst"
I'd definitely take a backup rifle. Another .30-06 would be perfect since you only need one ammo variety.

BTW, went to Canada last year with 2 rifles per person-no problem whatsoever. My buddy had a 20" barrel on his backup rifle that they measured. The rest they just "eye-balled"

One more thing to consider....before you enter Canada, you can stop at the U.S. Customs and they have a form you can fill out, to list your valuable items, that way when you return to U.S. you can prove that the items are yours, that they were not purchased or given to you in Canada. The form is simple, and has only one sheet, which they sign and stamp. No page 2 for "big-brother" worriers. GOod luck hunting!

When all that hoopla started with firearm registration here I had  a situation with the wife's Mohawk w when the firearms registration "Expert" tried measuring the barrel on the outside and came up short. As it was I had a cleaning rod with me and by sticking the rod in muzzle first to a closed bolt I could prove that we had a legal rifle.

I ALWAYS bring a spare rifle when traveling a long distance and particularly when leaving the country. Last year I took two rifles to Canada for a bear hunt. On the second day of the hunt it rained cats & dogs for the entire day. It was cold and windy to boot. Well..... it was  a good test for my favorite old Redfield scope that has worked flawlessly for years. However, Murphy's Law was in effect and it fogged up big time.

Thankfully, I had a second rifle all set up and ready to go. It is the first time I ever needed a spare rifle but it made up for all the times that I lugged around a second rifle that I didn't need.!

If you take the additional gun as a back up. You and your buddy should list the backup on both your forms.  Otherwise, if the gun in on your form, then only you can use it as a backup.

Very good point, I didn't think of that.
