On some mauser rifles, there is a steel washer on each side of the stock, hole drilled clear thru it. What is the purpose of this item? It must have a useful function of some sort.

Hey Stuffy..
No question is dumb......I think what you are referring to is used to take the bolt apart. After the bolt body is removed,push the firing pin into the hole in the stock and push down,give the end a quarter twist...watch for the spring tension!!!! You can then disassemble the firing pin....man it's easy to do but tough to explain....
