welding 76 bolt face?
« on: July 15, 2008, 04:52:34 PM »
I've got a chaparral 1876 NWMP in 45-75.  It's a toggle link action and it's got about 15 thou. too much head space.  The bolt is over buffed and the bolt face is pretty rough.  Gunsmithing guns of the old west suggest silver soldering a thin metal shim to bring the headspace back to worn and damaged bolt faces.  I'm thinking I can arc weld the face without throwing to much heat to the rest of the body and resurface it, and dress the firing pin hole while I'm at it.

My question is does anybody know the alloy?  What would be the best welding rod, I'm thinking 7018, but a 6011 would probably work.

Any expericances with this type operation?

I think I would turn it down a little more to clean it up and then silver in a shim and machine it to head space.  Welding is most likely a bad plan.  Silver in some 4140 full hard.  I would not think it much different than bushing a fireing pin.  Larry

Thanks, it seems the general consensis is to silver solder.  I silver soldered a shim on and a new cartrige lip.  Filed the face down and set the head space at zero with the thickest brass I've got.  Only time and a lot of ammo will tell how well this holds up, but if it doesn't it's an easy fix.
