Sweet 16 choke
« on: July 17, 2008, 03:31:51 AM »
I have an old, re-blued, Sweet 16 vent rib barrel. The markings on the bottom of the barrel are as follows. ( choke 168 * A ) this is followed by some sort of symbol. The A looks like it might have been an 8 with the bottom buffed off. The side of the barrel says ( full 16 Special steel ) Can anyone tell me what the choke should have been? It now has a poly choke and center white bead. Was it a full choke barrel originally? Shotgunner

A single asterisk, (*), on the bottom left rear of a Browning barrel designated a "full" choke barrel.

The more open the choke, the more asterisks in the designation - as in : (**), (***), & (****).

There are no *s on the barrel anywhere[/color]. Only the markings I mentioned. the reason I asked was there are non of the usual markings, this must be an early barrel. Shotgunner

The very earliest A-5 bbls did not have any marking as to the choke. Beginning around 1923-1924, right after the agreement w/ Remington expired and Browning began importing A-5's to the US, the barrels were marked in "plain language";ie; "FULL 16 SPECIAL STEEL', "CYLINDER 12 SPECIAL STEEL".... This went on until around 1934-1936, when barrels began to be marked with the asterisk
  • codes,  *=full, *- = IM, ** = Mod, **- = IC, **$ = skeet; *** = Cyl.

Barrels were manufactured in quantity then stored sometimes for years before being mounted on a gun. You could therefore easily have a properly s/n'd post 1936 gun with the plain language markings on the bbl that was acutally mfr'd much earlier.....

The original choke on your bbl was FULL.

[The original choke on your bbl was FULL.]

Didn't I say that, a month ago ?    ???

As in:
