Question(s) About the H&R Ultra Varmint
« on: July 19, 2008, 12:32:33 PM »
Hey guys, I (well technically my dad) ordered an H&R Ultra Varmint in .223 and I was wondering if anyone knows what the rate of twist is on this, also could you suggest some factory ammo that works good in these (dont reload). If anyone has some accuracy info (groupings) that would be appreciated too. Thanks!

Welcome aboard JesseC92, Your new .223 may have 1 in 9 twist and all my H&R/NEF .223 have the 1 in 12 twist rate so I cannot help you with a preferred bullet/round (factory) for your new gun. Each gun is an individual so you will have to try some different shells to find out what yours likes. Try the inexpensive ammo first, Remington green box etc, no use shooting expensive ammo if less expensive ammo gets the job done. Best of luck, I am sure others will pipe up with some help and be sure to keep us posted with news of how the gun shoots. 1" groups or less at 100 yards are to be expected from your gun with ammo it likes and if the shooter does his part. I do suggest if your gun is a 1 in 9 twist you start with nothing less than a 55 grain bullet, but nothing is certain....<><....:)

i think you can find the twist info in the faq.( i think it 1 in 9) the only load i've shot through mine is the walmart bulk pack 50 grain jhps. one tip mine seems to shoot better when its dirty theres a noticable change in poi between a clean and dirty barrel so i only clean it when i know im just going to shoot it and not hunt with it mine shoots about an 1" at 100 yards
common sense is slowly becoming uncommon

look in this thread just down about 3 -4 posts to the one entitled "223 GROUP - NICE!!!".
That thread has some great info for you, his rifle is a 1 in 9 and his shoots GREAT with 50 grain bullets...<><....:?

well, apparently if it has the serial number prefix "HY" then it will be a 1-9" twist, so being that i just ordered it it will probably (hopefully) be a new production, so I guess I'll change my question to "What would you guys suggest for a bullet weight in a 1-9" twist .223? "
