Problems with WSSM Split Necks!!!!!
« on: July 20, 2008, 07:38:07 AM »
I am having a problem with cracked necks in my .25 WSSM cases.  I had two test loads of 18 cartridges each and when I was finished I ended up with six cases with cracked necks.  Some had single cracks and others had two cracks.  One had three cracks.  At this rate I will be going through quite afew cases.  Oh  I forgot to say the cases were all new Winchester cases and one once fired win case.

I reload for my .300 WSM and have not experienced this problem  with those cases.  Is  this something unique with the smaller cases?

I have been loading since the late fifties and have not had this problem with any other reloads.  I have had split military cases that were old (.30 Carbine ammo), but never commereical or reloads.

What the hell  is going on or am I doing something wrong with these WSSM cases?     Help!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Based soley on your handloading experience mentioned and product reviews of Winchester brass on several online stores, I would tend to look at the brass itself as the problem. Folks reporting split cases right out of the bag of new Winchester brass (the WSSM line in particular)seems to be a common occurance.

Try to anneal your necks before loading and see if the problem goes away. It sounds like they are too brittle, like they were not annealed well to start with. I usually anneal after 4-5 reloads on most of my "normal" bottle necked cases. Good Luck and Good Shooting.

Larry,
It may not be a bad idea to contact Win about the splits. They may offer to replace any or all of them. Heck its worth a shot!

Went to their website and they make it very difficult to contact them.  I had to send a snail mail letter to them.  Explained all to them, so let's see what I get back.  For some reason I don't expect to get any response.  Who knows???

I don't get this.  How about quoting the person you are talking to.  This makes no sense and seems a little condescending.  Who are you talking to???

You were the person I was referring to - I thought that the link would make that crystal clear.    I did not mean to sound condescending, sorry, it was supposed to be ironic.  I was simply showing you that your expectation was probably wrong based upon the experience of others - as clearly demonstrated in the link I provided.

The Winchester website shows the following as their preferred contact methods.  I would suggest you call them and see what they have to say before assuming they'd blow you off.

If you have questions regarding guns, ammunition, parts, or cannot find what you are looking for online, please contact Winchester Customer Service directly at 1-800-356-2666 Monday – Friday, 8:30 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. CST. or submit your questions online by clicking here. http://www.winchester.com/contactus/contactus.aspx
