Herittage Arms Rough Rider 22\22mag

Does anyone have any first hand experience with one of these Heritage Arms Single Action 22's? http://www.ableammo.com/catalog/product_info.php?products_id=83278 My local gun shop has a few of 'em for just under $200 and they seem to be built pretty well. No Charter Arms or anything, but not bad for the price.....or so it would seem. Just wondering if anyone has held\shot one and if they thought they were cheesy, or misfired, locked up or were just plain a PITA.

They look sorta cheap to me, but I have never fired one, or know anyone who has one. Are ya sure ya don't want to save up a bit and get a Ruger?

Yeah Griz......your readin my mind. They are half the cost of a Ruger.....but it's like...if I'm gonna spend $200 on one of these....I may as well spend another $200 and get one that I know is good and will hold it's value.

Well, I've learned with firearms, if you get quality to begin with, you just never have to worry about it. The Heritage might last a lifetime. It might last a week. Of course, something might go wrong with the Ruger, too, but that's unlikely. It's better to have a quality gun that you would be highly surprised that something did break, rather than a gun that you were highly surprised that it took that long for it to break when it does.

Huh? Did that come out right?

I bought the one they called the case hardened one. It does not look like a case hardened gun at all . Its more like a green-gray finish on the aluminum reciever. The laminated colored grips are real nice though. Mine does shoot to point of aim which is bad enough, but its not very accurate. I wrote to the factory while under warranty to ask if the groups I was getting was considered acceptable accuracy or should I send it in for repair. They never even answered my letter. I bought a spare mainspring and narrowed it and thinned it for a lighter hammer action. I bought mine just for cowboy action practice, but I do regret buying it. Just goes to prove that American made goods are not always very good.

I've had some of the guns ,had .22/22mag. & .17 HMR . You get what you pay for . I have a Ruger Bearcat , to me it's the top dog !

I fired one a while back.  It shot very accurately.  The trigger was fairly good.  My Single Six feels more solid and appears to be better made.  I wasn't excited enough to buy one, but didn't think it was all that bad.  On other forums the RR owners seem to like them.  They are about half the cost of a Ruger and will probably do reasonably well.  I prefer the Ruger, but heck, one of these days I might buy a Rough Rider.  After all, I bought a P22. ;D

I used to have a rough rider , not the one in your pic tho , it cost me 100 bucks awhile back , it was accurate with the 22lr cylinder , very accurate for a 100 dollar gun , the metal was cheap and I mean cheap. I'd buy another one for 100 bucks , but 200? No, not for 200.00

I've never fired one, but I've looked at them a few times.  They don't look BAD.  They just don't look "good" know what I mean?  As stated above if I could find one for about $100.00 I might get one, but they're going for around $200.00, or at least that's the price on them when I see them around here.  No, not for $200.00. 

BUT I already have a Ruger Single-Six and a Bearcat, so I'm pretty well covered for SA 22's.  If I didn't.....I don't know.  Maybe.  The people on "gun boards" who have them, seem to like them.

Ruger Single Six 22LR/22 WMR is your best bet.

I realise the Heritage Arms Rough Rider is cheaper, but you can find good deals out there for the Ruger Single Six.

FWIW I've had a rr for awhile now and had no problems. Shoots to point of aim and seems to be well made. It works for everything from tree rats to gators around here.

Goood day to all. I bought one of these for a truck and plinking gun. With less than 5 bricks of .22 LR throught it it is trash. It serves the purpose now of my daughter's dry firing practice. I go with save your money and get a Ruger. Is worht the extra money and the wait.

Saw one at my local shop, it came with an Uncle Mike's style nylon holster for $185.  I looked it over and was somewhat considering it as a plinker but decided to hold off.  I'm glad I did, about a week later I found a pre-owned, mint condition, Ruger Single Six convertible with rosewood grips at the same shop that I was ably to talk the owner into letting me take home for $250 OTD. It had been shot so little that the cylinders weren't even scored by the paul.  Man was  I glad I hadn't wasted my money on the Rough Rider.

Bought one from cabelas a couple moths ago on sale for $169.  At the store the cylinder had less play than a ruger or the plinkerton model they had to compare.  The trigger pell also felt better than other 2 guns. At the range over a sandbag i shot 12 shots into a 50 cent piece size group at 20 yards.  the group was about .75 inch to left of center.  I'm happy!

Bought for truck gun so couldn't see spending over twice as much more for ruger.

I like mine.  I picked it up for less than $100 and then had adjustable back sights and truglow front site installed.  Really narrowed the groups to better than average.  25 yd groups were less than 1.5 inches, which is good for me.  Would I rather have a Ruger single six - not really.  This works for me just fine.  Now if you talk about a Bearcat, well that's a whole nuther story !!!!

My shooting buddy has the Heritage Roughrider.  It's not a bad .22 handgun.  It's the grandson to my old Tanfoglio TA76, in much the way the Henry H001 is to the old Ithaca Model 73 Saddlegun.  I have shot the Heritage against the Italian TA76 single-action, and my Dad's old 1957-made High Standard Doublenine.  All three use alloy frames, steel cylinder and barrel.  All shoot well, not great but are decent plinkers.
I do consider the Ruger SingleSix to be the next step up in overall quality.

Though I did use the TA76 Il Cheapo to best a feller shooting a Ruger SS at pop cans on the 110 yard berm - I won.
More due to my having more practice though.   ;D
