.223 Rem. question
« on: July 21, 2008, 06:13:08 AM »
I have a Rem. 700 Classic in .223 (12" twist) on the way to my house.  I will use it for practice to develop marksmanship for hunting big game with my 6.5x55 and 35 Whelen.  All three rifles are M700 Classics.  The Whelen has Weaver K2.4, the Swede a Sightron 4x42, and the .223 will have a Leupold Rifleman 2-7X32.  Along with my old .22 LR Rem. 513S with Weaver K4W this makes up a battery that will cover any rifle hunting I could ever hope to do.

After settling on a load, most of the .223 shooting will be offhand, sitting, kneeling at targets...not varmints.  I am looking for a load with MV 2800 - 3000 fps which I can load in quantity without weighing charges.  Accuracy in 1.5" range will be just fine for my purpose.  The trajectory of all three of the centerfire rifles and the comparable scopes should make all shooting skill practice transferrable between them.

I have a few hundred commercial Winchester cases and a bunch of CCI and Win. SRPs.  I figure a ball powder or very short cut powder will meter best.

Any suggestions on bullet and powder combinations while keeping an eye on economy?  Thanks.

Any of the powders in the burn rate near BLc2, H-332, H-335 ect. should work well. That includes AA 2230 and AA 2460. With the 12 twist I would recomand 50 gn. bullets. I have loaded all of the powders I mentioned and got sub moa loads through an AR with all of them. These are also all ball powders and I load onA 550 Dillon so I never weigh a powder charge once the measure is set.
