My 88 finally got here, what a disappointment !

#37995   When was this rifle made ? Does it take a flat bottom clip or one that is more rounded like I've seen on most post 64 rifles.  Looks like I have an ejection problem a fired shell just barely clears the port.
   The stock maybe beyond my ability to refinish. It is the old style with checkering . The inside of the lever needs bluing.  Where am I going to get an ejector and pin ?
     It does fire and feels great, the trigger is not bad either. Looks like I got my work cut out for me !

 When was my rifle made ? # 37995 ? I gave it a good cleaning this morning and it would eject but not smartly . You just don"t know if the xase is coming out or not.

1957 - and ALL M-88 & 100 issue detachable magazines, both pre & post -64, have a flat bottom on the outside.

Thanks Ranger 44. I didn"t know about the clips. I had one 88 that had a very flat clip which fit into the reciever as a matter of fact I saw two clips side by side and there was certinally a difference. I looked on the guns places and these flat clips are selling for 110.00 up. I hope they do interchange ! I ordered one from Brownell's before I got your message.
     Now that I've looked the rifle overin daylight it might be worth saving. What do you think ? It has a great piece of dark figured wood, The blueing is all there, action smooth as butter. I got it to eject after a good cleaning but it doesn"t throw them out smartly unless I jack the action Quick and hard. Is this normal ?
     Wow 1957 it's almost as old as me I was born in 1942

There is a difference in the 88 & 100 clips.
They both should fit and work in the 88, not really sure.
I have a model 100 with three clips.
Two are model 100s and one is a model 88.
All three fit in the 100 and work but the 88 clip lacks the hump or stop on the follower that engages the bolt to keep it open after the last round has been fired.
If you put the two clips side by side in the up position you will see the difference in the two followers.
I am not sure if the stop on the follower of the 100 clip would interfer with the closing of the bolt on a 88.

 Well, I finally took the rifle out and shot it. I am not disappointed in it's accuray. Shoots fine with Federal 150 loads. I guess it is worth saving after all.
   Now can someone tell me a quick and easy way to refinish the stock ? it has a lot of scratches and dents in the wood.  I've never refinished a stock so keep it simple for me. Thanks

Country Boy, Glad to see your recovering from your surgery.

Sounds like a nice 88. My best friend used to hunt with one of those. As far as finishing up the stock. I have just taken a course cloth and put orange oil on the cloth, or the orange oil with pledge wax in it, and just rub the stock down briskly several times a day. let the oil dry before each application. You will be amazed at the results. Byron

After the last round, you can't close the bolt and the lever without detaching the m100 clip. It is not always a disadvantage.

Of course you can - just simply depress the follower manually, as in any unconverted military bolt action rifle.

It CAN be an advantage to those folk who get hyper, and didn't realize they ran the rifle dry - It saves dry snapping on an empty chamber, which with these rifles can easily lead to a broken firing pin (unless it has the updated FP).
