Low recoil 12 gauge loads.
« on: July 21, 2008, 02:32:21 PM »
One of my favorite loads for my ole Topper 12 gauge shotgun was a Revelation 3 - 1 - 6 I used to find at Western Auto stores.  Now that I have obtained a used Pardner again (see $45.00 Pardner) in a thread below, I am looking for that load again.  I found some 3 - 1 - 8 on the shelf but I want to find some 6 shot not 8 shot.  1 1/8 is the lowest weight I can find in 6 shot now.  Anyone know of a source for 1 oz shot 12 gauge.  I know some will say 3 - 1 - 6 is a 20 gauge load but the shorter shot string of the 12 bore seemed to throw a better pattern for me.  Not to mention it feels a lot better on the shoulder then 1 1/8 or 1 1/4 oz in a 5 lb 8 oz shotgun.

I just purchased a box of Federal 1 oz 6's not too long ago.  If you want a really light load look for 1oz of shot with less than 3 dram.  now they are putting speed on the shells and anything 1200 Fps or less is going to be a low recoil load.  The same with any of the 1 1/8 oz loads with less than 3 dram ( 1200 fps) are going to be a smooth shot shell.
The closer we get to Dove opener that more shells will be available in the 1oz selection and Wall Mart will have a larger selection.
Looking at the Remington catalog there are 1 0z promotional game loads available in 8, 7.5, and 6's.  The speed is 1290 and they are a little over 3 dram but will work.

Check the shotgun shells here:

I've never tried them as they are impossible to ship in here without spending a lot of money.

Check the shotgun shells here:

Those mini shells are maybe a little too light (about 1/2 oz).  I know the British used to have a 2 inch 12 gauge loaded in 9/16, 3/4 and 7/8 oz which pretty much matched .410, 28 ga and 20 ga.  The pattern was supposed to be outstanding but I never tried them.

I do reload rifle and pistol but I've never reloaded shotshells.  I've thought about getting one of those little Lee loader hand tools for a few light 12 gauge loads.  What's your recipe for the 7/8 oz load?  In fact I was happy with the 3 - 1 - 6 loads so if you have any data for 1 oz I would be happy.  That is if I can find one of those hand loaders.
