Red dot/p22
« on: July 21, 2008, 04:44:51 PM »
Just wondering if anyone has any target time with this set up.  Right now I have the Laseraim and am not a  big fan it.  I have put the mount on order and will be shopping for a scope.  I really like the gun, have heard many rumors of ftl and ftf, I have yet to see it happen in mine.  I have nearly 200 rounds down it with rem hp and agulira and 0 problems out of any.  Just looking for something that will make the little thing a shoot a little more accurate.

The best way I found to make mine accurate is to put it down and use either my Kimber conversion on my .45 frame or my Ruger with a Red dot.

You probably will not have any problems with your P22.  I have nearly 5000 rds through mine and less that 10 ftfs.  The secreet to this gun is to find what ammo it likes.  MIne really likes anything CCI.  NEver put a red dot or thought about doing that.  I like mine open sighted.

It is easy to say hey go get this gun go get that gun, in fact I do not recall asing about any other gun.  I like what I have and I enjoy shooting it and it makes a fine little carry in the woods and on an atv or mountain  bike.  Not to knock what you said, x2 on the Ruger, but  have this gun now and WILL have a Ruger mark 3 soon.

Back to the Walther,  I went a head and ordered a bridge mount for it now I just need to find the right dot scope to put up top.  I can get really good group out to 15-20 yards.  But out to say 25-30 it is gets wild, and since the gun is so lite it makes for a abd group, so I think that with the red dot it may help me get use to shooting it.

I put Reflex red dot sights on mine and its a very fun shooting little pistol. Wife loves the dot sights as well and can burn up a brick of bulk ammo in no time. I have a Pentax on it right now and while it shoots good and fast accurately out to 20 yards but out @25-30 the pistol is just not made to be all the accurate IMO. My IZH 35M will outshoot it all day with open sights but it is a true target pistol.

Your right about them being perfect little pocket pistols. Mine has both barrels and the short one is pretty accurate for being so short. but the extra bit of barrel adds to the accuracy but why they call it a target model I have no idea.

I have had a few FTF issues and I think it was mainly cheap bulk ammo lots. The occasional stove pipe etc as well but I bet I have 10000 rounds through it as well by now. I do find plated or jacketed bullets work the best versus round nose soft lead, had major issues with that causing leading of the barrel MAJOR.

Besides that it is a fun little pistol and the wife loves it so I let her think it's hers  ;D

One thing I have noticed is the need to give the slide a quick clean every 500 rounds or so of ammo thats a bit dirty to keep the slide moving smoothly otherwise it tends to not fully engage to battery when cycling after the shot. Usually you can tell it needs it when you drop the slide on the 1st round and it doesn't close all the way.

Lots of info on rimfire central about them and what to watch out for. There have been some slides breaking and other issues but they all seem to be taken care of without problem. Mine had the set srcew for the fake muzzle break/weight loosen up while shooting and slowly hammered the set screw till it was canted. Not sure if its worth sending it off, might just drill and tap the hole for a larger set screw.

Red dots are the way to do for sure. Even the cheap little NC Star I got off ebay for $20 was good enough to make it a fun shooter. My biggest pet peeve is how the ejection of the spent cases is inconsistent and many come right back at the shooter. When this happens with the mount over the slide it tends to bounce the empty down jamming the slide when cycling.

Thanks Bo, I have seen a few cracked slides but it looks to me like it may mostly be on the longer brl.  I think that the main problem with the gun is the overall weight, it is to light to make a great shooter.  I thini with the weight of a reddot it should help a little IMO that is.
