74-year-old man shot dead

This is one of the members at the range I use. The retired man loved his shooting and would go there a couple
of thimes a month. They climed over the fence behind him, as he walked forward to his target they
took his pistal and shot him 5 times in the back.

They did this for his pistol. Bastards!

Sad Sweet.

Sorry to hear....I've never considered the possibility of being robbed and killed inside a gated (?) shooting range.

I've heard that South Africa has become a violent place.

That's horrible.

Yes, you wouldn't expect that type of crime to happen in that setting, but senseless violence seems to happen everwhere.

I never shoot all my ammunition when I'm at a range or even when I'm hunting.  I always try to make sure I leave with at least a fully loaded pistol available.  I've been known to leave the case open and then stop the truck to lock things up legally after I get in and have the truck running with doors locked a couple hundred yards down the road.  Ever had someone talk to you as you are loading up and they say "So, did ya' shoot it all up?"  Could be an innocent question but they might be casing you...

I am sorry to hear about him, I bet he had a lot of nice hunting/shooting stories.

Nothing surprises my anymore on how things are turning out in this world and justice system.

You can call me perpared not paranoid, I always carry a loaded handgun when I am at a range.

You can find all sorts or nice, smart and stupid people at these ranges.

I also never leave my firearms unattended for any reason, when I check my targets.

When I was at a range I used to shoot at I was talking to another guy that was there one day. He told me about a couple guys that would hide and watch shoot. When you went down range to check your targets they would steal your guns and drive off before you could even get back to the bench. Dale

Thats really horrible. But when I walk down to check my target. Those thoughts go threw my mind when I'm the only person there. So I check every now and again to see if anyone else shows up.

My process when I go by myself, I stop a few miles before the range and load my handgun wear it on my hip holster.

When I go by myself to the range I take my only one firearm out of my truck load it with ammo, and head to the range.

I setup carrying my rifle and ammo with me at all times, I have always thought of someone driving up quickly and taking my rifle or other firearms and this has worked for me.

I have seen people drive up when I am downrange and take a look around.

The range isn't too far, so taking only one rifle with me is OK.

A guy was killed on a range for his guns not far from here about 20 years ago. I usually carry a pistol when I walk downrange.

I usually pull the bolt from my rifle or even take a box or two of ammo with me just so I cannot be shot with my own firearm. I am never without a handgun and have no problems with using it against 'people' who suddenly show up at a range when noby else is there.

Public ranges, but more importantly private ranges, are a great source of firearms for those who would steal them.  There must be some insane reason why people feel 'safer' on the range when they are checking their targets at the 100 yd line and their rifle and ammo are back on the bench......................Mikey.

It's not a question of what the world's coming to - bad things have always happened and always will happen.  We just live in a much more connected society now.  Sweet 6.5 is a foreigner - from New Zealand I believe?  (correct me if I'm wrong).  Go back 20 years, and how likely is it that you would have even heard about this incident?  Or even such an incident in a neighboring state?  Things like this generally don't get coverage on a nationwide (and certainly not global) level in mainstream news outlets, so for the most part the only people who would have heard about them would be locals.

Fast forward to today, where almost anyone on the planet can communicate instantly on an individual level with anyone else, sharing stories, interests, etc, and things have a tendency to seem worse than they are.  You hear about much more shootings, muggings, etc, than you ever would have in the absence of the internet.

Not trying to take away from the tragedy of this incident - just saying that such things still are rare occurrences and for the most part, people at the range tend to not mean anyone any harm.  At least intentional harm anyways.  I think you're far more likely to be shot at a shooting range by a guy behaving carelessly or without proper knowledge of his gun, than to be shot intentionally.

All of this is one Hell of a commentary on the world we live in.  I don't know if it's worse than when I was young or if our communications are better or what but when I read of stuff like this, maybe living up a holler ain't so bad. ;)

SA has become a violent place??  I thought Mandela fixed all that? There hasn't been any farms confiscated for spurious reasons nor thru intimidation has there?   Of course no trans tribal killings. Not any predatory black gangs roaming uncontrolled where before the great social revolution, you could walk unafraid.  I thought everything was sweetness and light.  ;)

I'm sorry to hear about that man.  Something similar happened here in my county.  I live in Belmont, Ms.  And about 20 miles north of us is Iuka, Ms.  Our sheriffs father had alsheimer's disease and he shot a dog at his house(and apparently didnt realize what he did or something).  Later a young man(who owned the dog) about 20 yrs. old came into his house and shot the old man in his chair with his wife watching.  These things are happening alot here lately.  And everytime something like this happens it just makes the anti gun crowd jump for joy.  It's sad and you know they can't wait to hear news like this.  Anyways I hope the guys gets all thats coming too them, in this life and the next.  And i"m sorry about the loss of a man you knew and saw often.

I'm not paranoid about ranges,I still think they are probably one of the safest places to be, but murders can show up anywhere, and my momma didn't raise me to be stupid. With all the drugs in the world now, there probably is a higher percentage of the population who would whack someone for a $400 gun. I used to think that we were safer from the druggies in small towns, but it seems like they have learned to gravitate to them because of chiep housing and less law enforcement.

Here the wife and I are thinking about moving back to the states, you guys are making me paranoid.  I still remember the problem I had when I lived in D.C.  A car load of young men tried to force me to pull over, while driving down the freeway.  The local gangs targeted vehicles with out of area plates.  I had Alaska Plates on my truck.  Anyway I knew if I pulled over and stopped they would rob and shoot me, If I did not pull over they would shoot me, so what do I do, left turn.  Crushed the guy with the gun between my truck and the top of the car.  They shot up my truck, but I'm still walking.  That's when I decided to move back to Alaska.

When I go to the range there is usually a bunch of guys there that I know, so I feel pretty secure.  But when there is no one else there I lock my rifle in the truck before going downrange.   I always have a pistol on my hip or under my coat.  It's legal to carry concealed in Alaska without a permit.

We've had several public shooting ranges in my general area. The range officers had what appears to be chicken-poop regulations but in hindsight, they work for our benefit. They are: When it's time to check targets, all rifles must be off the bench and racked. While checking targets, no one is permitted to touch a rifle until everyone returns from downrange and the command to do so is given. During target check, no one is permitted to leave the range. Unfortunately, these regs became necessary as firearms were indeed stolen while their owners were down range.

A lot of this would have been avoided if we invested in birth control. In USA and worldwide.
