Wife got her first hog
« on: July 22, 2008, 06:57:41 AM »
My wife shot her first hog last night.  Missed early in the evening on a good size sow, but then later connected on this boar.

Awesome. She looks proud.

I'm totally unfamiliar with hog hunting.  What state are you in, what season length is there, or is it year round? Bag limits? thanks

Trib, we're in central Texas.  No season.  No bag limit.  Landowners can hunt them at any time by any means without a license.  I'm not a landowner, so i need permission and a license, but can hunt them year-round.

chutes, yep it's a handi.  .223 wearing a Pentax gameseeker 3-9x40.  i've gotten to where i usually hunt with my AR unless whoever I'm with is turned off by military type weapons.  Both shoot the same load:  55gr Sierra Gameking pushed by 20.9grs of H4198.  She shot it a little high about 3 inches behind the shoulder from about 90yds away.  It never took another step.

Congratulations to the Mrs.  She should be proud.  You too.  Now you have a hunting partner prettier than any two guys on this Board.  No worries about that first miss.  Where you hunt there's no lack of hogs and no end to the line.  Kill 'em all.  They'll be more.

The bullet did not exit.  We didn't butcher the hog to find it.  I haven't had many of these exit when shot into a hog at 100yds or more.  Under that I've had them hit bone and exit.  But it still does the job if placed right.  I actually shot one in the lungs broadside and it ran like nothing hit it.  I had to take it down with a second shot.  They're just funny that way....plus, it's a .223.
