7.62x25 Handi..sort of.
« on: July 22, 2008, 07:17:01 AM »
Hello to everyone from a newb here.

I inherited a H&R 10ga and thought what am I going to do with this as geese are far and few between around here. After being informed that this is the place for Handis, I did some research and see that it is a 79 model with the big SB2 frame. I had an old 30.06 take off barrel and a reamer so....I cut the chamber off, turned the outside to a tight fit 10ga profie, fitted it to the 10ga, and then cut the chamber. The insert is 18 1/4" long with an oring holding the front centered. The Winchester X factory loads run around 1950fps through this barrel. It was just a lets see if I can do this sort of thing as the bead sight isn't ideal for long range shots. I just wish NEF would sell barrel blanks as the 7.62x25 is .308 bore. From what I have read only the 10ga and heavy 12 will fit the big SB2 frame, right?

The 10 guage frame will only take other 10 guage barrels and the 12 guage Ultra Slug (heavy) barrel.

Oh,

Your project sounds pretty nifty.  I bet the recoil is nothing.

I've been planning on doing this to my stevens 940 20 ga. how's the accuracy?  I'm thinkung of doing either a
38/357, or doing like you and getting a surplus "big 30" ie .310 or .311 enfield/mosin bbl. and making a 32 H&R mag, Although I've heard the mag. loadings will have to be throttled back some to avoid the primers setting back due to the shotgun sized firing pin. I've thought about bushing it and putting in a smaller dia. pin.

Hank

P.S, I can't figure out why they don't offer the handi rifle in their own named for them chambering??? I'd think it'd sell like funnel cakes at the fair.

McMauser the only real paper punching I did was at 35 yards since the bead sight isn't the greatest. It grouped about 1.5" with some holes touching. The 10ga has the small firing pin so primer support is no problem, with other shotguns you need to be careful. I have a 16ga Mossy that a small pistol primer will almost fit into the firing pin hole. MCA Sports makes shotgun inserts that they feel are safe in certain sized shotguns, but you need to check primer support. I have thought about installing some sights or a rail for a cheap red dot with black Locktite. I agree if they or someone would offer blanks or even do custom chamberings, they would sell like hotcakes.

Xhare, what  recoil? ;) I left the chunk of steel in the stock and the thing just barely kicks. With the factory loads it is about as loud as a 22 magnum. I've loaded some 110gr V-Max down to 1000fps and now will start to go the other way to see what they can do.

This is a cool combo!  That cartridge is pretty amazing out of the pistol I have, so would be neat to have one in a rifle too.  Please keep posting, I may have to have one done.  Since I can't do anything mechanical, who does the stubbing for hire, or which donor barrel would one use to have it rebored and chambered?  DP.

you might want to check  j.d. jones'  experiments in the 'whisper' concept. when loaded with heavy for caliber bullets (think 150 to 200 grs., if the will stabilize) you can get some suprizing results. just keep a close eye on pressure signs! i,ve experimented with tiny charges in large capacity cases, and with the right load, i can get enough velocity to penitrate a 2" board at 50yds, and still not make enough noise to cover the sound of the bullet smacking the wood!

Rkeltner that is another reason why I built this. I would like to build a dedicated subsonic 7.62x25 down the road and this setup is used to test loads. I like the shoulder for headspacing a lot better than on the mouth for the 300 Whisper, plus don't have to worry as much about reduced loads in big cases. I was told by someone that did this several years ago that his ideal load for his rilfe was 180gr MatchKings running at 750fps. I'll have to make the throat longer before I can get those in there. I did load a few 150gr up and the third shot stuck the bullet in the bore so those will need a little more powder and testing. Then on the other end you can load the cartridge up to a good varmint level round.

Dpe.ahoy, I also would like to know what would make a good Handi with the regular SB2 frame and which barrel is best to use for the donor stubbing.

I have a 7.62x25 handi with a 16" heavy barrel built by a fellow in NY. 2lb trigger, laminate stocks, pillar and epoxy bedded, Millett red dot sight. It's a hoot and accurate too! E-mail me at gpunlimited@roadrunner.com if you want more details.
