3 weeks to Deer season
« on: July 23, 2008, 03:54:13 PM »
South Carolina's deer season starts in 3 weeks, Aug 15th.

I've got two stands set up with 50 yard and under shots, should be no problem with my 45 BH. I've only taken 2 deer and about 5 hogs with a handgun, all were in the last year and a half. I'm hopeing to do a little better this year.

The new load of 7.0gr of titegroup with both cast 250 gr RNFP and 255gr SWC-GC both shoot about 2" groups at 45 yards with iron sites. I think a little better, but for be thats some of my best groups. Still got 3 weeks to practice, and then 4.5 months to hunt.

Must be a great State to hunt, with such liberal seasons as compared to some other states. Good luck.

The thing is everything shoots at anything that has bone on its head. The only trophy potential is on large traces of land with a very good management program. This is usually in the low state. Season runs until Jan.1 and speaking of this  I have got to get my bow ready. Upstate comes in later though and it has a designated bow, ML, and firearms season unlike the low state. I have got about 7 weeks to go out with my bow on Sept 15. Good Luck

30-06man:  Great Luck to ya!  The last time I hunted S.C. was almost 35 years ago and it was great.  Hunted one of the large state game management areas and the Game Wardens were great guys.

Took two large boar and two large Rattlesnakes with a Super Blackhawk in 44m and a Whitetail with the 444 Marlin.  Slept out under mosquito nets on top of the picnic tables and purchased 10 lbs of fresh shrimp directly from the 'Shrimper' for the trip back home.

Had a wonderful time.  Let us know how it goes.  Mikey.

In the SC mountains there is more WMA land than ever. They got another 70 acres this deer season and almost every where up there is good hunting. There is not too much WMA land down in the low state anymore and almost all of it is under pressure except the mountains. I will let y'all know how it goes and good luck to yall also.

Wow! Good for you on the early opener. Our bow season opens Aug. 30 here, but if hunt bow,you generally can't hunt the firearms seasons, which open end of September.

Well, I truely do appreciate the long seasons and often take it for granite, but sitting in the Charleston SC swamps in 95-100 degree weather and mosquitoes that will carry you off, and all the (RATTLE HEADED COPPER MOCISONS) does take a lot of patience and willpower. It gets better arround October - only in the 80's by then.

Gene: You make a very interesting point to a Westerner like me. Does it at least cool off in the morning? And remember, you can always make a little gas money selling copperhead skins to makers of primitive bows ... ;)

Our weather starts cooling off around Halloween. Heck, even in December it could be 35 - 55 degrees at night and 70 - 80 during the day. Weird, but it's all Im used to.

You must be pretty close to me :).  I generally hunt the Francis Marion area myself which is right outside of Charleston.  I've taken off Aug 15th in anticipation and will be setting up over in the Waterhorn unit on the first morning and the weekend, and then hunting the Santee and Northhampton units during the week.

PS - Get one of those Thermacell mosquito repellant machines.  They work miracles ;).  At least on the mosquitos.  Nothing but a good set of boots or chaps for the snakes :).  October it does start getting good though.  There's a certain feel to the air in October (partly the temp, partly a smell) that is like nothing else.  By far my favorite time of year.

I have to agree. During November and December peak of the rut it runs 45-60 in the day and 25 on a cold day to 40. I about had a 10point that I think would have scored 120 easily that wouldn't come into ML range. Hopefully he will this year.

Several years ago a friend invited me to hunt on family property in SC.  Our families had been good friends while in the military so my wife came along for the visit.  We arrived a few days before the season opened and were offered the use of their guest room.  A couple of days before the season opened we went out to look the hunting area over, as I said "private property".  He showed me the stands, and the best way to get to them in the dark, we set until just after dark and spotted several deer, nothing large, but respectable.   Opening morning we rolled out at 3AM, dined on a beautiful homemade breakfast provided by his wife, then set out to the property.  We arrived well before daylight, I managed to find my stand and get into it, and set there until it cracked daylight.  That is when I notoced several other hunters scatered around the place.  I sat until noon before getting down, never seen a deer.  I met my friend back at the truck and ask him about the other hunters, he said I don't know them, but you just can't keep them off your property.  The next day my friend and his dad spent the morning and half the afternoon running trespassers off the property, needless to say, it was a sorry hunting trip, but the hospitaality of my friend and his wife made it worth while.

It was almost 105 here yesterday!  Deer season opens on the first Saturday in Nov, maybe it will cool down to about 98 by then.
