i am trying to get a cast load for deer.  i am using 310 grain hardcast bullets.   i was gunning for 1000 fps, chrono-ed today and they clocked at 874 fps.   will these be suffiecint, or should i load up to my original target velocity?

Assuming a B.C. of .200 you will get about 19" of drop at 120 yards if you sight in at 50 started at 870 fps. starting them out at 1000 fps sighted at 50 yds, you get 14+ " of drop. The energy figures are low BUT that weight bullet will punch thru just about any deeryou see.

I would prefer a little more velocity even though it has been said ,that will punch thru any deer,A little more velocity 1000-1200 fps would create a better wound channel instead of only caliber size 44-45 hole.

as jhalcott stated, the bullet will likely pass through the deer.

My own feeling is that we, the users of cast bullets, have gone overboard on bullet hardness. At the velocities you're using there is simply no need for an alloy harder then 1:20 (tin to lead). And bullets of this (relatively modest) hardness will normally expand much better on medium game like deer, as well as produce some secondary fragments within the would channel complex that contribute to a quick kill.

Despite the ballyhoo of the ads, the plain fact is that in most arms well designed bullets of medium hardness will produce less leading related problems up to 1200 fps, and with selected loads up to 1400 fps, than will harder bullets.

Sounds like the Lee single cavity bullet.  I load about 21 gr. of H110.  This should get you about 1200 in a revolver.
