South Western LongTerm Camping
« on: July 26, 2008, 03:25:23 AM »
Plan on heading out 1 October for a year long adventure. Maybe spending December thru March in the West Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, Nevada, Utah area. Looking for ideas for good places, either BLM or National Forest, to camp. Free or nearly so. Will just be me and my Toyota tuck. Tent camping, so don't want to freeze my butt off. Fishing and small game hunting would be a great bonus.
Suggestions, advice, warnings are all appreciated.

Tn, Lots of great places to camp free in NM. The Gila national forest is one.

Texas is mostly owned, Arizona has some public land. I like NM best though. Byron

IFIN you do not mind I will give you some thoughts . I would have 2-3 cases of M.R.E.'s with decent dating . Maybe a G.I. cot to keep your but off the ground . have some sleeping bags that are ment to be placed inside of another for maximum warmth . have some really cold weather stuff . I will try to have it where you can see it . What size or you ? ( S , M , L , XL  ) boot size ?
I really like the poncho liners , quilted , soft and real warm . You need three pairs of boots , one to wear , one may be wet or ? and one if one pair is damaged . have woodland and digital camo , camelback's etc . the new GORETEX STUFF IS WONDERFUL ( but sorta pricey if you have to buy ) check with a friend AD or guard or go to USCALVERY AND CHECK THEIR STUFF .

Got everything you are talking about. Goretex coat, three pair of high quality boots AND good socks to go in them, good rain gear, really good cot and sleeping pad, two good sleeping bags, couple of 100% wool blankets. Also got a case of fresh MRE's and enough dehydrated food to feed Napolean's army for a year. Water filters and purifyers, fire starting stuff, etc. Most of the clothes and stuff I have had for several years. Onliest thing I had to buy new was a tent. Mine was so old it had started to dry rot!
Right now looks like I will be in Fla. fishing from Oct 1 thru Oct 30, (gettin' the house and stuff ready to auction between now and then), East Tennessee hunting Nov 1 thru Thanksgiving. Plan on heading out west around November 30, doing the southern route thru Lousiana, TX to New Mexico. Then up thru Nevada to Californy and on up to Washington State. Expect to make the turn around back to TN about July next year if all goes according to plan (Which it never does).

Today ended up being a totally wasted day. Had to go to court, sit and wait.
Will do inventory tomorrow AM. Back in court Friday.

Not really. This is NOT an auction site. You can sell it here but you CANNOT auction it here.

My improper English got me caught.
The "here" I was referring to was Nashville, not this Board.
Sorry about that.

It sounds like you are about to embark on a once in a lifetime adventure.  I wish you the best in your travels and look forward to hearing about your trip.  If you don't have a laptop to take along and snag a free WiFi connection from time to time, just stop by a public library and make a post to catch us up as to where you are.

One place I wish I could spend some time at would be the Slotted Canyons area of northern Arizona / southern Utah, near Lake Powell.  Also try to hit the Yellowstone/Grand Teton area in eastern Idaho / western Wyoming.  The campgrounds are crowded, but if you go just a short way into the back country, you'll have few neighbors and beautiful scenery and some nice natural hot springs to sit and soak in.

Good luck and Best Wishes

thru Louisiana, Texas to New Mexico?
Well, you have to cross Texas anyway, its true, mostly privately owned...but Davis Mountains are right close to New Mexico.
I mean 6000 feet, thats high elevation for Texas.
Santa Fe and Taos are must see, Santa Fe Plaza in a Spring evening is real nice.
But I like the Weminuche Wilderness in Colorado, near Durango...and Continental Divide Trail for midsummer, start at Wolf Creek Pass, You're already at 9500 feet to start so gradual and too hard hiking up a couple thousand more feet.  Pack in for a week or two, (dehydrated food).
Wish I was going on a trip like yours.

Be sure to check out the area along Colorado 149 near Creede for lots of great camping spots.  Robert

When you get to the "real west" make sure to be aware of any BLM campgrounds that might fit your plans. Of developed campgrounds I like them the best. Usually free or nearly so and uncrowded. Best of all not a lot of silly rules and regs. The wife and I stayed at a compground in Canyonlands last spring, and believe it or not they had a regulation that you weren't supposed to walk around. Had to stay on the trails and campground area.

Arizona State campgrounds are usually nice and also uncrowded as long as they're not near water. If there is fishing available, there is usually no space available.

Between Clovis and Portales, NM, you'll find Oasis State Park. Last I checked, there was a collection box
for a modest camping fee. It doesn't get a lot of visitors and is kinda nice. I've known a few touring cyclists
who use it from time to time, and when I was younger, it was a great place to take a date ;)
