Does anyone have any experience with the XS ghost ring sights on your 336?

Hi Terry,
I don't have one on my 336, but I do have one on my 1895 Guide gun. It works well and is a good sturdy sight. The only thing I wish I could change is the appature which is pretty big. Skinner makes a sight that I have just  installed on my Henry that has diffent size appatures for it and it's less money than the XS system.

The 1895 Guide Gun is simply a variation of the 336, and the XS works just fine.

As with every accessory, the user needs to be aware of a few things, though.

Although rifle equipped with a ghost ring peep is just as accurate as the same one equipped with a smaller ID peep aperture, it is many times faster for game shooting.

The trouble is, that many ghost ring shooters try for tight paper target groups - for which a more constricted peep aperture is better.  It's a better idea, to use the right tool for each job.

The XS ghost ring peep is available with the sighting stem threaded for an aperture, so an educated user may have their cake, and eat it too.

As with all top-mount peeps, a taller front sight blade is going to be needed in order to zero the rifle - or else it will shoot too high with the rear sight all the way down.
The best route for the average guy is to buy a peep set that includes the correct front sight - also available from XS, as well as Williams (w/FireSight), etc.

Don't forget to order a rear sight slot filler blank as well, and remove the rear barrel sight to clean/speed up the sight picture.

Accuracy will depend on the shooter. Like Ranger said, you won't shoot paper tight groups with this sight. When I tried the Skinner sight on my Henry, the groups really tighend up.

I also had Ghost rings on my Guide Gun. They were fast, and, for me, accurate enough at short range. However, I recently mounted a low-power Leupold variable, and increased my effective range, as well as accuracy. In fact, I was at the range today with this set-up and shot a 3-shot clover leaf at 1oo yards. This was impossible (for me) to do with the ghost rings. If you like peep sights, the ones that you describe are excellent, in my opinion. I just could not get the accuracy that I was looking for much past 50 yards.

Is a 3 inch group at a 100 yards a realistic expectation? Thanks

I have skinner sights on my 1894 44mag and like them. A lot cheaper than others.

For some, a 3" group is possible for others like myself, it is not. That's the one advantage of using a Skinner sight, it comes with a .096 peep, but if you want  to use it like a ghost ring, unscrew the apature.  See the picture countryrebel posted. You can also use your existing front sight with Skinners sights.

I also have them on a couple Marlins. I like them allot, durable, efficient and no nonsense.

Size of the rear aperture will have little effect on accuracy in a Marlin. not that they cannot shoot small groups. We all know that they can and do shoot very well. its just peeps are what they are, with in the range of the rifle if you do your part learning to shoot properly they will hold up there end of the bargain.

Good luck, you will like them, Ill bet on it!!

I think a 3" group is possible with the XS sight system. I used a thinner front blade with an XS rear on my .44mag marlin. I can manage 3" at 50 yards off hand. I haven't shot at 100 yards much more than shooting some steel plates. I think that these are great open sights for short range work. I use mine as a hog gun and I like the set up.

I have the XS back up sight that fits on a Weaver rail and quick detach Warne rings on my Leopold 2.5 x 20 scope. I pack it just in case my scope has a problem. Just need a small screwdriver and I'm back in buisness or ready for close brush stuff.
