Garden Gun
« on: July 27, 2008, 03:47:40 PM »
Wonder if there would be any demand for a Sportster smooth bore?  Marlin used to make a 22 mag garden gun, I think Savage still makes a 22lr version. Used to shoot skeet with them as a kid, I think I could find a place for one!!

With a sportster and a reamer you can have one.  Larry

I'm interested.  I wonder what game I could use that on.  Probably just pests in a barn.

I use my 22 lr garden gun in my out buildings and it works very well.... or should I say much more effective than using birdshot in a riffled 22 lr... I sure wish that I had one in a 22 Mag though!

I read in another forum about these smooth bore 22's.  Seems if the barrel is less than 18" they are an illegal shotgun according to the BATF.  Just something to keep in mind.

Remington use to make a pump action smoothbore .22 shotgun, buddy of mine inherited one along with the thrower and a partial box of small claypigeons, when he was younger and got a case of the stupids and traded it in on a remington 870 shotgun, would have bought it had I known.

BTW (remington) they did do a collectors run (remake) about 5 years ago, but they were around 5-600.00 for them. Marlin did have a garden gun smoothbore, but i believe those were produced through the 90's and then discontinued.

those little guns were great for pigeons in the barn, wouldn't go through the roof or barn boards, but boy that shot could bounce! Man, I wish NEF would make a barrel for one of those! I would beat down the door for one ;D they were heck on gophers in the old orchard too, and didn't tear the grass up like a .410 would, plus they had a range of 20 ft so no worries about were the shot was going

I have seen the 9mm guns but I believe that they were offered more in europe than over here, someone did a write up on them, but can't remember for the life of me who....

Sure wish I owned one.....maybe one of these days.....

Some months back, I was going thru some boxes of "gun stuff" left to me by my grandfather at his passing. I found two small shotgun chamber inserts. One in 16 and another in 12 GA, both with an off sett chamber in .22LR. BOY ARE THESE NEAT!!! They pattern quite well at moderate distances, like you would use inside a building. I had read that the actual barrel dimensions mattered little. The choke would still do as it was intended. It appears correct. I cannot shoot too far, as was mentioned if you do, watch out for ricochets!!!

I don't think I myself would change a nice old .22 LR smoothbore in to a .22 Mag smoothbore but it should be as easy to do as changing a .22 LR Versa Pak or rifle barrel into a .22 Mag. As long as there was no problems with cartridges feeding through a magazine it would be easy for any competent gunsmith (like mine ;D ;D) to do....<><....:)

As I was reading CW's post it reminded me of a story my Pappy once told.  He said he took a 12g shell punched out the primer and placed a .22 in the hole.  He set up a target and fired,  it went zing! where it went no one knows he never tried it again.  Definitely NOT something I would suggest doing, just a  funny old story.
